Curacao have created one of the greatest stories in CONCACAF history after securing their first-ever World Cup qualification. A tense 0-0 draw against Jamaica on the final day was enough for the Caribbean nation to complete an unbeaten campaign. The tiny island, with a population of just 156,000, has now become the smallest country to ever reach a FIFA World Cup.
Notably, Curacao beat Iceland’s previous record made in 2018 with its 350,000 inhabitants. The Dutch Caribbean island finished top of Group B with 12 points. Their campaign was built on defensive discipline and a standout 7-0 win over Bermuda, which proved decisive in the final standings.

Curacao entered the match in Kingston knowing that a draw would seal qualification. What followed was a night of intense pressure. Jamaica hit the woodwork three times and thought they had a stoppage-time penalty, but VAR overturned the decision. Curacao survived the late drama and protected their unbeaten record to secure a landmark achievement.
The team is managed by former Premier League and Netherlands coach Dick Advocaat, who missed the Jamaica match due to personal reasons. Under his guidance, Curacao went through qualifying without a defeat. Notably, the Curacao team is made up entirely of players born in the Netherlands with Antillean roots. Curacao will learn their group-stage opponents at the World Cup draw on December 5 at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C..
Despite missing out on automatic qualification, Jamaica and Suriname kept their hopes alive. Both sides secured spots in the inter-federation playoffs scheduled for March. They will compete with Bolivia, New Caledonia, DR Congo, and Iraq in a six-team tournament for the two remaining World Cup berths.
