Moumita Dutta

Europe’s final route to the expanded 2026 World Cup has reached the most important milestone. The play-off draw which will set up the stage for some European teams to grab their last chance to qualify for the coming World Cup. The draw is staged at FIFA headquarters on 20 November.

The ceremony, scheduled for early afternoon in central Europe, will map out four knockout paths that determine the continent’s last qualifiers for the tournament in North America. 12 European nations have already booked their tickets as group winners. Four more will ultimately advance through this high-stakes play-off system.

Sixteen teams are entering the draw, each with contrasting journeys and ambitions. Twelve are arriving as runners-up from the main qualifying groups. They will be joined by four sides who have been rewarded for their performances in the 2024-25 Nations League.

Romania, Sweden, North Macedonia and Northern Ireland make up that quartet. They’ve ranked highest among group winners not already placed in the play-offs. The remaining contenders include – Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Czechia, Denmark, Italy, Kosovo, Poland, the Republic of Ireland, Slovakia, Turkey, Ukraine, and Wales.

  • Albania
  • Bosnia and Herzegovina

Pot 4 (Nations League qualifiers):

The procedure to qualify is precise, with rankings playing a major part. FIFA’s latest men’s ranking list assigns positions 1 through 12 to the qualifying runners-up. The Nations League entrants fill slots 13 to 16. These rankings divide the teams into four pots. The strongest four in Pot 1.

They are followed by Pot 2 and Pot 3, and finally the Nations League qualifiers in Pot 4. The draw moves pot by pot. They’ll create four distinct paths – A, B, C and D. Each path features two one-off semi-finals. In every bracket, the Pot 1 team is paired with a Pot 4 opponent. Pot 2 will be matched with Pot 3.

Home advantage goes to the seeded sides in the semi-finals. And a pre-draw decision settles which of the semi-final winners hosts the final. With margins razor-thin in one-legged ties, this detail often proves decisive. The schedule is tight. Semi-finals fall on 26 March next year. The winners will return five days later for the path finals.

UEFA requires potential hosts to confirm venues by December 2025. The losing semi-finalists will play friendly fixtures on the night of the respective finals. It’s a cycle that has already delivered surprises in Europe. Hence, the draw represents the next dramatic step. Once the brackets emerge, the road to claiming the continent’s remaining World Cup berths truly begins.
