Scotland Captain Andy Robertson Pays Tribute to Diogo Jota After Historic World Cup Qualification

Abhinav Goel

Scotland are heading to their first World Cup in 28 years after a breathtaking 4-2 win over Denmark at Hampden Park. The drama on the pitch was matched by emotion off it. Scotland Captain Andy Robertson revealed that he had been thinking all day about his late Liverpool teammate Diogo Jota, who died in a car crash earlier this year.

Andy Robertson said that the two often spoke about playing in the 2026 World Cup after both missed out on Qatar 2022. It was a chaotic match, which featured two stoppage-time goals. The victory brought the stadium on its feet and delivered the moment an entire generation had been waiting for.

Speaking to the BBC after full-time, Robertson admitted he was “in bits” before kickoff. He said he couldn’t stop thinking about Diogo Jota and the conversations they had about finally making it to a World Cup.

“We always talked about what this World Cup would mean. He missed Qatar through injury, and Scotland didn’t qualify. Today I couldn’t get him out of my head. I know he’ll be smiling over me tonight.”

The Scotland captain said the pressure of knowing this was his “last chance” added to the emotion of the night. But he delivered one of his most complete performances in a Scotland shirt.

Scotland started fast and stunned Denmark within three minutes. Scott McTominay produced a spectacular overhead kick to put the hosts ahead and ignite Hampden. However, Denmark equalised twice through Rasmus Højlund from the penalty spot. After Denmark were reduced to 10 men following Rasmus Kristensen’s second yellow in the 61st minute, substitute Lawrence Shankland restored Scotland’s lead in the 78th minute. But the visitors refused to fold.

Denmark equalised again through Patrick Dorgu. At 2-2 heading into stoppage time, tension grew inside the stadium. However, the decisive moment arrived in the 93rd minute. Ceeltic left-back Kieran Tierney stepped forward and curled a stunning long-range strike into the top corner. Hampden exploded as Scotland edged ahead again.

Five minutes later, the party truly started. Substitute Kenny McLean spotted the Danish goalkeeper off his line and launched an outrageous shot from inside his own half and it flew in over Kasper Schmeichel. Scotland last appeared at a World Cup in 1998 and this qualification run under Steve Clarke completes a remarkable turnaround for the national team. After reaching back-to-back European Championships, they have now returned to football’s grandest stage.
