1. Moneyline
Quite simply, a moneyline wager is backing the team that you believe will win the game.
2. Spread
The spread is a hypothetical handicap, with the favorite will be given a minus point spread, and the underdog a positive point spread.
Your job is to predict which team will ‘clear’ their spread, e.g., the Philadelphia Eagles with a -6.5 point spread would need to win the game by seven or more points for your bet to land.
Alternatively, a +7.5 spread on the New York Giants would see wagers prevail if the Giants win the game, tie, or even lose by a margin of seven or fewer points.
3. Totals
A sportsbook will offer you a total points line, and your objective is to predict whether or not the game will go ‘over’ or ‘under’ that line.
These are the three main markets that our NFL tips will cater to. But there are other football betting options, too:
- Props – A prop can be a team or player-based wager in which you’re betting on a specific outcome, often in the ‘over’ or ‘under’ style described in Totals. It can be passing yards, receiving/rushing yards, total sacks, total completed passes, and so on.
- First or Anytime Touchdown Scorer – As the name suggests, you can also wager on the player(s) you believe will make it into the end zone; be it the first TD of the game or one scored at any time.
- Quarter/Half Betting – Similar to the moneyline market described above, but with specific reference to individual quarters or halves of the game.
- In-Play – Did you know that all of the leading sportsbooks offer in-play, or ‘live’, betting odds on NFL games? This is useful when reacting to a moment, such as a quarterback injury, or when watching a game and getting a feel of how it might play out.
- Parlay – A parlay is a bet that accumulates two or more selections, i.e. moneyline and total points. Parlays can be permed from multiple games or, with sportsbooks now offering Same Game Parlay options, from a single event.
- Teaser – A teaser is similar to a parlay, but here you’ll have the chance to make spread and totals picks that are different (i.e. more favorable, but at lower odds) from the main lines offered.
- Futures – These are season-long bets. Who will win the Super Bowl? Who will win the NFC/AFC? Who will be crowned MVP? And so on.

In a three-way NFL market, where the possible outcomes are home win, away win, or tie, typically the favorite will be available at minus odds. A $10 bet at -125 odds would return $18, with a profit of $8. An underdog will be available at plus odds, e.g., a $10 bet at +150 odds will return $25, with a net profit of $15.
If the point spread is -6.5 on the favorite and +7.5 on the underdog, bets on the favorite will land if they win the game by seven or more points. Wagers on the underdog will land if they win the game, it’s a tie, or they lose by seven or fewer points.
