UEFA Approves Barcelona-Eintracht Champions League Clash at Camp Nou

Barcelona will finally return to the Spotify Camp Nou for Champions League football. The move comes after UEFA officially approved the club’s request to host next week’s match against Eintracht Frankfurt at their renovated home. The decision ends more than two years of exile at the Estadi Olimpic. It will mark another major step in Barca’s long-awaited comeback to their iconic stadium.

The Catalans are already preparing for a special weekend as the stadium reopens in La Liga against Athletic Club. It will be the first official match played at Camp Nou since May 2023 and the first in front of supporters in over 900 days. The refurbished venue currently has a temporary reduced capacity of around 45,000 seats. The return comes after months of construction delays, capacity restrictions and strict UEFA checks.

UEFA Gives Camp Nou Green Light

Notably, the match against Eintracht Frankfurt on December 9 will be the first Champions League fixture at Camp Nou since the 0–3 defeat to Bayern Munich on October 26, 2022. Earlier this month, Barcelona held an open training session attended by nearly 23,000 fans. The event was part of UEFA’s stadium-readiness assessment and was deemed a success by club president Joan Laporta.

UEFA has approved Barcelona’s formal request by appealing to the “spirit of the regulation,” which normally prohibits stadium changes during the Champions League group phase. The club’s strong relationship with the governing body played an important role. It followed earlier approvals that allowed Barca to begin the competition away from their traditional ground.

UEFA inspectors will be on site during the club’s match against Alaves on November 29 to ensure all operational and safety standards meet Champions League requirements. This will be the second match played at the renovated stadium following Saturday’s reopening.

Saturday’s La Liga match against Athletic Club will mark Barcelona’s official return to Camp Nou after extensive renovation work. Fans will witness the beginning of a new era in a partially modernised arena designed to eventually expand to 105,000 seats. Barcelona manager Hansi Flick also received a timely squad boost with Raphinha and Joan Garcia both expected to return from injury for the Athletic match.
