The NFL offseason was filled with a lot of questions for Russell Wilson. We did not know when or if Wilson would be signed by any team in the future, and it seemed like the Pittsburgh Steelers gave up on Wilson after they had Aaron Rodgers visit their facility and meet various staff members. Wilson, though he’s not in his prime anymore, can still contribute and put up decent numbers.
Last season, the 10x Pro Bowler threw for 2482 passing yards, 16 touchdowns, and 5 interceptions. While he started in 11 games, he led the Steelers to a 6-5 season in 2024. Even though the team made the playoffs last season, they were bounced out of the first round by the Baltimore Ravens.
Ever since Ben Roethlisberger retired from the NFL, the Steelers have not found much success in the quarterback department. At first they gave Kenny Pickett a chance to lead the offense but we all saw how that turned out for the Steelers. Last season they signed Russell Wilson for a one-year deal but he wasn’t the upgrade that the Steelers may have expected him to be.
Even after all this time in the free agency, the Steelers still do not have a quarterback yet. There are reports suggesting that Aaron Rodgers could be the next quarterback but so far they have not signed him yet. So we wonder if the Steelers plan to pick a QB from the 2025 draft instead.

Wilson has signed with the New York Giants to a one-year $21 million deal. The contract also includes $10.5 million guaranteed. Wilson has moved around a lot in the past few seasons and this will be his third team in 3 years.

The Giants were searching for a quarterback this offseason and were unsuccessful in getting other quarterbacks such as Sam Darnold who signed with the Seattle Seahawks, and reports state that they were initially interested in acquiring Aaron Rodgers but him wanting a longer deal may have hurt their chances in acquiring him. The Giants had already signed Jameis Winston as their backup option so the question to be asked is, was this a good signing? Can hiring Wilson finally solve some of their problems offensively?
We believe that signing Wilson wasn’t all that necessary for the Giants as they already had acquired Winston and could have simply drafted another quarterback in Jaxson Dart, or Shedeur Sanders, or some other QB from the NFL draft.
The Giants could have saved up $10.5 million and acquiring Wilson doesn’t really help their case much. Wilson is 36 years of age and clearly on the decline. His production now is best compared to a quality backup option and nothing more. His accuracy has significantly taken a hit over the past few seasons. We cannot think of a reason why Wilson was acquired instead of pairing a rookie quarterback with Winston. Maybe it’s because the Giants believe that they do not have much of a chance to draft somebody like Sanders? We do not know.

While Wilson is surely an upgrade than what the Giants had last season, it is still not enough to really convince us that the Giants are going much further than last season. Now that they have signed Wilson, the Giants may try to draft somebody like Travis Hunter, or Abdul Carter instead of going after Shedeur Sanders. The Wilson signing provides some flexibility on their end, but at what cost?
