Matthew Stafford is one of the more underrated quarterbacks in the NFL today. He might not produce at the levels like Jared Goff or Joe Burrow did last season, anymore, but is still effective and you can count on him to deliver. He’s been in the league for 16 years and has played only for two teams so far in his career. He is a 2x Pro Bowler, won the comeback player of the year award in 2011 and was 8th in the MVP votings in 2023. Stafford’s biggest achievement of his career? Winning the Super Bowl with the L.A Rams in 2021.
In the 2021 postseason, Stafford threw for 1188 passing yards in 4 games, and also had 9 touchdowns, which helped the Rams win the Super Bowl against the Bengals. In fact, Stafford is only second to Eli Manning for the most passing yards in a single season playoff run. If he has the right pieces, he will deliver. Stafford has stepped it up when it matters most and that’s what counts at the end.

Recently an NFL analyst said, Matthew Stafford could surpass Aaron Rodgers if he wins another Super Bowl trophy. Both the QBs have one Super Bowl each, under their belt currently. This makes us wonder, can Stafford surpass Rodgers if he wins another ring and who was the NFL analyst who put out this statement? Let’s find out.
Colin Cowherd stated in his podcast, The Herd with Colin Cowherd, that if Stafford can win one more Super Bowl, he will surpass Aaron Rodgers. He said “The Rams are not far off from winning a Super Bowl. They’re really close.” Cowherd continued “They were driving to beat Philly (Philadelphia Eagles) in a snowstorm and that defense got better every other week, and they’re all coming back and they’re super talented.”
Cowherd then proceeds to talk about Stafford and he stated “Matt Stafford was better in high school than Aaron Rodgers. Much better in college.” Cowherd said “Better in his first four years in the NFL and much better now in his last three season. Now there were 10 years when he (Stafford) was in dysfunctional Detriot and put up a lot of stats but didn’t get much to the playoffs and do much. And Meanwhile, Aaron Rodgers was in Green Bay. Highly functional, great draft and developed organization, good coaching, and had a middle of ten years. But if you put Aaron in Detroit and Matt in Green Bay, I think he (Stafford) has more than one ring. But my take is legacy matters.”
“If Stafford wins a second Super Bowl, that means he would go 4-0 in the playoffs and the Super Bowl, he would have more rings than Aaron. He’d have a better playoff percentage than Aaron. He would be better late than Aaron. Better early than Aaron. As a former number one pick, there’s a real argument, you’d take Matt Stafford.”
We do not believe that winning one more ring, makes Stafford better than Rodgers. Yes legacy matters but so does accolades. Stafford has not won a single MVP yet in his career, whereas Aaron Rodgers has four. Stafford has also never been selected to the All-Pro team, whereas Rodgers has 5 All-Pro selections. Stafford has been selected to pro-bowl twice, to Rodgers’ 10. These are just some of the accolades that Rodgers has won so far in his career and there are many more.
While it’s true that both the players only have one Super Bowl and Stafford may be a better leader, we can’t count out Rodgers’ accolades. However, you could say that Stafford was playing for a Detroit team that was horrible on the defensive side of the field. Meanwhile, Rodgers had way better pieces around him but only won one Super Bowl. As Cowherd stated, if the two QBs had switched places in their primes, Stafford may have accomplished more than what Rodgers did with Green Bay.
IS MATTHEW STAFFORD A HALL OF FAMER…?

• Super Bowl Champion
• 59,809 passing yards (10th most all time)
• 377 passing touchdowns (10th all time)
• 91.2 passer rating
• 6th all-time in passing yards per game
• 2x Pro Bowler pic.twitter.com/4iArZk6n7R
Nevertheless, these are just hypothetical scenarios and we have to go with what we have currently and so far. Rodgers is a better quarterback in our eyes but Stafford should definitely be a future hall of famer. What do you think?
