Who Was Matt Beard? Lasting Legacy of the Liverpool Manager Who Passes Away at Only 47

Moumita Dutta

The football world is mourning the sudden passing of Matt Beard, former Liverpool Women’s manager, who died at just 47. Known for his tactical expertise and warm personality, Beard’s career left a lasting mark on the Women’s Super League and beyond.

His influence stretched across multiple clubs, from Millwall Lionesses and Chelsea to West Ham, Bristol City, and two successful spells with Liverpool. Beard guided the Reds to back-to-back WSL titles in 2013 and 2014. With that, he cemented his place in history.

He became one of the most successful managers in the women’s game. Beard came back to Liverpool back in 2021. He oversaw their promotion from the Championship and later a remarkable fourth-place top-flight finish in 2024.

Beard successfully disrupted the league’s established elite. However, even beyond his career achievements and trophies, he was admired for valuing people above status. He once said, “Here, no one is above anyone. For me, it’s important that everyone feels valued.”

“He was the most amazing, caring man who was loved by anyone who had the pleasure to meet him.” More tributes have come from across the football community. Former England goalkeeper Carly Telford posted on X, “There aren’t enough words for Matt Beard, he believed in the women’s game when few did… he made a bad day better!”

It shows how Beard touched everyone’s lives beyond at every level. True to his words, everyone felt valued by him and they’re showering the same love and respect for him now. Eventually, I realized I could combine my passion for writing with my love for football, and I’ve never looked back. My favorite part of the job is everything—when you’re doing what you love, even a late-night deadline feels like extra time in a thrilling cup final. Lastly, Lionel Messi is the GOAT.
