Cole Palmer Injury Update: What Happened to the Blues Winger As He Was Taken Off in Manchester United vs Chelsea Game?

Moumita Dutta

Chelsea’s chaotic night at Old Trafford was compounded by an early setback as Cole Palmer limped off within 20 minutes of the high-stakes Premier League clash against Manchester United. The Blues were already rocked by their goalkeeper Robert Sanchez’s fifth-minute red card.

They found themselves forced into a third substitution in record time when Palmer pointed to his groin and signaled to the bench. Fitness concerns had surrounded the winger since midweek. He pulled up late in Chelsea’s last match in the Champions League defeat to Bayern Munich.

Enzo Maresca downplayed the problem before traveling to Manchester. Even so, Palmer’s movement looked labored from the opening whistle. After barely touching the ball, the England international clutched his groin in frustration. He threw his head back and eventually trudged down the tunnel.

Despite the visible anger, Cole Palmer later reappeared on the bench with heavy ice strapped to his thigh. Maresca explained after the match: “Cole this morning did a test to play this game. He was not 100 per cent. It was a fantastic effort for the club, for his teammates, for the team. Unfortunately he was not 100 per cent.”

Tactical Headache for Chelsea

The enforced change added to a farcical first half for Chelsea. Estevao and Pedro Neto were already withdrawn for tactical reshuffles after Sanchez’s dismissal. Then Palmer’s exit meant Andrey Santos was thrown into the action much earlier than planned.

It marked the fastest in Premier League history that one side had used three substitutions. Man United, meanwhile, seized the advantage. Bruno Fernandes broke the deadlock in the 14th minute, and Casemiro doubled the lead before the interval.

Though Trevoh Chalobah pulled a goal back late, Chelsea suffered their first league defeat of the season, ending their unbeaten run. Palmer’s potential absence casts a shadow over Chelsea’s immediate future. Especially since Sanchez is  now suspended and a congested schedule is  looming.

It includes an EFL Cup tie against Lincoln City and a league clash with Brighton. Maresca is facing a stern test of his squad depth. The manager will hope scans confirm a minor flare-up rather than a prolonged layoff for the player who has quickly become central to Chelsea’s attack.
