Who Is Lois Boisson, the Last French Player Left at the French Open Singles This Year?

Devavrat Kulkarni

Lois Boisson's incredible fairytale run in Paris continues after her straight sets demolition of Mirra Andreeva!

With the semi-finals now set for the women’s side at Roland Garros, we have seen some memorable tennis up to now. Some seeds fell early on the red Parisian clay, providing some surprising battles along the way.

For the most part, though, the tournament has played out as expected. The French players did quite well, especially on the women’s side, but now, as the tournament proceeds to the latter stages, only one French player remains standing, and she is on a dream run.

Wildcard entrant Lois Boisson kept the nation’s hopes alive as she defeated the world number 6, Mirra Andreeva, in the quarter-final yesterday with a stunning 7-6(8-6), 6-3 win to enter her first semi-final at the Grand Slam stage. Boisson will now face the number 2 seed, Coco Gauff, for a place in the final.

Earlier, Boisson played quite possibly the match of her career against the number 3 seed, Jessica Pegula, in the fourth round. The French national came out on top in a match that went the distance. As the excitement of her dream run builds up, let us take a brief look at Boisson and her journey so far in the tennis world.

Who is Lois Boisson?

Lois Boisson is a 22-year-old tennis professional who is currently making waves in women’s tennis with her standout performances at this year’s French Open. Boisson was born on 16 May 2003, in Dijon, France. The city is located in Eastern France, approximately 3 hours away from the capital, Paris.

Until recently, Boisson was living a quiet life on tour, but her clash against Briton Harriet Dart made headlines for the wrong reasons. Dart, during a match against Boisson in April, asked the chair umpire, “Can you tell her to put on deodorant? She smells really bad.”

Boisson took the remark in her stride and moved on to make headlines for the right reasons. She is now the only French player to reach the quarter-finals of the 2025 French Open, from either the men’s or women’s side.

When Did Boisson Turn Pro?

The French athlete turned pro in 2019 at the age of 16. She has mostly been part of the ITF tour, with occasional participation in the main WTA tour level matches. In 2021, Boisson made her debut on the WTA tour after earning a wildcard spot for a doubles match in the main draw of the Lyon Open.

Last year was her best year on tour as she claimed 3 titles on the ITF circuit and started taking impressive strides in raising her game to the next level. To date, her best performance came in 2024 when she won the WTA 125 event in Saint-Malo.

The 2025 French Open marks her first career main draw entry in a Grand Slam, and she had already exceeded expectations prior to her fourth-round match against Pegula. Earlier, Boisson defeated the 24th seed Elise Mertens in the first round, cruised her way through a second-round win against Anhelina Kalinina, and pulled off a tough three-set win against compatriot Elsa Jacquemot in the third round.

Lois Boisson Injury Struggle in 2024

Following her win in Saint-Malo last year, Boisson rose significantly in the rankings, entering the top 200. On 6th of May 2024, she reached her highest ranking of 152 and also earned a wildcard spot for Roland Garros. Unfortunately, though, Boisson suffered a gruesome injury that forced her to miss her debut at the Grand Slam level.

The French national was playing in the Trophée Clarins event about a week prior to the French Open when she tore the ACL in her left knee during her first-round match. Recovery from the injury took a long 9 months, but her performance in Paris is a huge positive for her.

Lois Boisson Career Earnings

There is a disparity between her actual career earnings, as the WTA website lists Boisson’s career earnings as around $21,100 prior to the French Open. However, other sources claim it is much closer to $148,000.

Either way, Boisson is set to earn the biggest purse of her professional playing career as she will pocket a minimum of $784,000 for her efforts in reaching the semi-finals at Roland Garros. On the back of a strong showing in Paris, Boisson is set to rise significantly once again in the rankings and increase her wealth at the same time.

After starting my professional career as a French-to-English translator, working as a content writer is a new adventure for me. I started out in the sports media field for two main reasons: my love for sports in general, especially the NFL, NBA, and Tennis, as well as my passion for writing. The best part of this job is that I get to write a variety of pieces with the freedom to explore content from various angles. It also enables me to stay up to date with the sporting world, which otherwise can be difficult to do in the day-to-day grind. In a world full of chaos, sports unite and entertain like nothing else!
