“Exactly What France Needs”: Jannik Sinner and Tennis Royalty Heap Praise on Lois Boisson at Roland Garros 2025

Boisson to battle Gauff for a spot in the final.

22-year-old French wildcard Lois Boisson continued her dream run at the 2025 Roland Garros on Wednesday, defeating No. 6 seed and Russian prodigy Mirra Andreeva 7-6(6) 6-3. It was an awe-inspiring performance on Court Philippe-Chatrier, as the home favourite produced multiple comebacks to prolong her run in her first ever major tournament. The victory means that Boisson is through to the semifinals, where she will face American title hope Coco Gauff.

It was a calm and composed performance from Boisson, who would have undoubtedly had a storm brewing internally. Ranked No. 361 in the world before the French Open, she will become the top ranked player from her country when the new rankings are released after the competition. Due to make her Grand Slam debut in Paris last year, the unseeded superstar suffered a threatening knee injury. However, she has silenced all the ghosts from her past in 2025.

It’s incredible, thank you for supporting me like this. I have no words,” Boisson expressed to her boisterous home fans after beating Andreeva. It was a titanic tussle between two young guns of the WTA Tour on Wednesday. Andreeva, who won back-to-back trophies in Dubai and Indian Wells earlier this year, led 3-1 and 5-3 in the opening set. However, she squandered two set points and succumbed to the pressure applied by the French crowd.

Ultimately, Boisson held her nerve and produced clutch tennis when it mattered most. Her straight sets triumph earned her some huge plaudits from the tennis world.

Jannik Sinner, John McEnroe and Others Laud Lois Boisson for Roland Garros Breakthrough

Showcasing some swashbuckling shotmaking on one of the biggest stages in the sport, Lois Boisson has made the world stand up and take notice. Later that day, World No. 1 Jannik Sinner also won his quarterfinal encounter in straight sets. In the aftermath of his victory, the three-time Grand Slam champion was asked about the rise of a new French starlet.

“It’s amazing, no? I think it’s exactly what France needs,” Sinner said about Boisson becoming the first female wildcard in the Open Era to reach the Roland Garros semifinal. “Something very new, very special, great mentality. I think she’s someone who is quite calm on the court – at least seems like it.” He continued “We were actually in the same centre for a little while, and we practiced together even there. So I know her.”

Meanwhile, the likes of John McEnroe and Andreeva herself have also praised the breakout star. “I’m very impressed. I’d never heard of her until this tournament. I’ve only seen her play in the last couple of rounds. She looks like she spent a lot of time in the gym when she was hurt, because she looks strong and physically fit,” McEnroe said. On the other hand, Andreeva stated that Boisson is much better than her ranking indicates.

Even former players like Tim Henman and Mats Wilander were not far behind, claiming that it has been an ‘incredible story this fortnight’ for the ‘absolutely brilliant’ star. Can she go one step further and reach the final by causing an upset over No. 2 seed Coco Gauff? Only time will tell.
