Inside Jannik Sinner’s evolving support team, from trusted coaches to a post-suspension shake-up.
Jannik Sinner, current world No. 1, has become synonymous with the term “perfect tennis player,” according to many enthusiasts. The 23-year-old has held the top ranking since June 10, 2024, and owns 19 career singles titles, including three Grand Slams. The latest came at the 2025 Australian Open, where he defended his title by beating Alexander Zverev in straight sets.
But his rise hasn’t come without controversy. Since early 2024, Sinner has faced doping allegations after twice testing positive for the anabolic steroid clobetasol. Considering his explanations and tribunal hearings, the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) suspended him for three months in February 2025. The fallout triggered a shake-up in his entourage, so who was fired, and who got hired? Let’s find out.
He’s been No. 1 for 52 weeks straight.

Sinner’s current coaching entourage includes Simone Vagnozzi, Darren Cahill, Marco Panichi, Ulises Badio, and Andrea Cipolla.
However, by the end of 2025, Darren Cahill announced his departure from Sinner’s team, citing tour fatigue and a desire to spend more time with his family. His exit sparked a flurry of speculation, with rumors suggesting that Rafael Nadal’s former coach, Carlos Moya, might join Sinner in 2026. But Moya swiftly shut down the reports, telling Radio Nacional de Espana that he has no plans to work with Sinner and that the rumors are unfounded.
Vagnozzi, a former pro and ex-coach of Marco Cecchinato, joined Sinner’s camp in 2022 following the departure of Riccardo Piatti. Just months later, Aussie Darren Cahill, nicknamed “Killer,” came on board. He is a former tennis pro who also coaches with the Adidas Player Development Program and ProTennisCoach.com and serves as a Grand Slam analyst for ESPN in the U.S.

“Your coach is Darren Cahill… we all love Darren. What I wanna know is does he do anything that’s annoying? He seems perfect.”

Together, the duo earned ATP Coach of the Year honors in 2023, guiding Sinner’s rise to the top. Sinner credits Vagnozzi with the tactical side of his game and Cahill with emotional support and confidence-building, calling their partnership a balanced blend of mutual respect and shared vision.
After Vagnozzi and Cahill were named the 2023 ATP Coaches of the Year, Sinner explained, “I’m talking in general, but I think the tactical part is more for Simone. The emotional part, talking in the right way before the match, giving confidence not only to me but also to the team, is a little bit more Darren’s job. But I think the mix of both of them, it’s nice. You know, they have a lot of respect for each other. Nobody wants to go over one, so they are always on the same line.”

After the fallout of the doping issue, Sinner dismissed Giacomo Naldi and Umberto Ferrara. They were replaced by trainer Marco Panichi and physiotherapist Ulises Badio, both of whom previously worked with Novak Djokovic. Panichi had parted ways with Djokovic in May 2024 and Badio did so in 2022. Sinner has also added osteopath Andrea Cipolla to his team.

According to an independent tribunal, the banned substance had entered Sinner’s system through “no fault or negligence” of his own. The source was traced back to his physiotherapist Naldi and fitness trainer, Ferrara. Although Sinner cooperated fully, WADA still issued a three-month suspension in February 2025, stating that “an athlete bears responsibility for the entourage’s negligence.”
The 23-year-old lost trust in both after Ferrara reportedly purchased the topical steroid Trofodermin over the counter in Italy and passed it to Naldi to treat a cut on his own finger. Naldi, unaware of the risk, later massaged Sinner without gloves.

mma I’m an academic turned sports writer from Raipur, India, specializing in the NFL, MMA, and tennis at The Playoffs. I previously wrote for Sportskeeda and hold a B.A. and M.A. in History. My journey into sports media began far from the field, rooted in the arts and sciences. Funny enough, I didn’t grow up a sports fan; I used to see it all as just noise. But a fateful writing job introduced me to the world of sports, and what began as a gig quickly became a passion. I understood those voices aren’t noise; they’re emotions of true sports fans, and now I am one of them, writing with the same energy I once questioned.
