Last year in April, Frances Tiafoe decided to end his partnership with coach Diego Moyano.
Frances Tiafoe is slowly becoming a top-class tennis player with his fearless approach and current run of form. The American ace has made a rise in the ATP singes’ ranking and reached into the top 10 for the first time in 2023. Since then, he is improving her game skill and his Grand Slam performance is getting better. Recently, he made into the quarterfinals of the 2025 Roland Garros.
Tiafoe is the first Sierra Leonean American man to be ranked in the top 10 by the ATP. After making a Slam debut in 2015, he won challenger titles and made into top 100. In 2019, Tiafoe made top 30 debut and reached fourth round of US Open in 2020. Next year, he not only played an ATP 500 final but also won first top-5 game against Jannic Sinner.

Tiafoe’s growth has been remarkable, and he played his career’s first Grand Slam semifinal in the 2022 US Open. During this run of form, he beat Nadal in the quarterfinals and became the American No. 2. Last year, he played another US Open semifinal but lost to his country rival, Taylor Fritz. Let’s get to know about the core team behind Tiafoe’s rapid growth.
Last year in April, Frances Tiafoe decided to end his partnership with coach Diego Moyano which lasted less than six months. It was Moyano’s second stint with the American star as he previously worked as USTA coach. Both started their partnership in December 2023. During the stint, Tiafoe slipped to No. 23 in the ATP rankings and went 10-8 in the season.
Before this, Wayne Ferreira was the head coach of Frances Tiafoe and both worked for three years. It was a successful tenure for Ferreira as the American ace reached the maiden US Open semifinals and earned the top-10 ranking.
David Witt, who previously coached Venus Williams and Jessica Pegula, is now current head coach of Frances Tiafoe. The 52-year-old coach was the hitting partner for the Williams sisters. He coached current US No. 2, Jesscia Pegula from 2019 to 2024. He guided Pegula to the WTA 1000 title and parted ways after the 2024 Australian Open.
Witt, Venus Williams’s former coach, joined Tiafoe after the Wimbledon 2024 and the pair got a success in their first Grand Slam when the American ace reached the semifinals of the 2024 US Open. Tiafoe had a tough phase after US Open and ATP also fined him a total of $120,000 for aggravated behaviour against the umpire after the loss in Shanghai Open.
With Tiafoe looking to close out the match, David Witt called for a body serve.

Now, the pair got another success in their third attempt at Grand Slam as the US No. 2 reached the quarterfinals for the first time in the Roland Garros. During this run, he didn’t drop a single set.
Tiafoe also recalled the story after his exit from the Wimbledon 2024 with a loss to Carlos Alcaraz. He called David Witt and asked him to work with him. “He’s the man,” Tiafoe said of Witt in July. “I called him right after I played at Wimbledon and I was like, ‘bro, you wanna do something? You’re a free agent right now and so am I. So let’s do something; let’s try to have a good partnership.
“Obviously. he did really well with Venus [Williams] and Jess [Pegula]; some unbelievable years with [them]. I was trying to find a coach for a little bit and it wasn’t as easy as I thought it was going to be. He’s super chill and so am I. So I was like, ‘let’s do it.’ So it worked out well. So far he’s got one win with me, so it’s good.”
