Get to know the family behind the Belarusian tennis star.
Aryna Sabalenka, the unmistakable force in women’s tennis, captured the 2025 US Open title by defeating American Amanda Anisimova, reaffirming her status as one of the sport’s fiercest competitors. Already a four-time Grand Slam champion, Sabalenka had fought hard at the French Open for a fourth crown but narrowly fell to rising star Coco Gauff in a gripping three-set battle. Her victory in New York proved the Belarusian tigress’ aggression and dominance, using setbacks to fuel her motivation and make her place among the elites.
Earlier in the season, Sabalenka kicked things off with a win in Brisbane and made the final of the Australian Open, narrowly falling short against Madison Keys in three sets. She went on to lift titles in Miami and Madrid, bringing her career tally to 20 singles titles. Solid performances in Indian Wells, Stuttgart, and Rome kept her firmly atop the rankings. All roads led to a fairytale ending in New York.

While Sabalenka’s game is best suited to hard courts, her growing comfort on the other surfaces has been evident, especially after her semifinal run in Paris in 2023 and All England Club in 2025. Now, the attention also turns to the people who’ve helped shape her journey – including her parents – whose support has been foundational since her earliest tennis days.
Aryna Sabalenka’s parents are Sergey and Yuliya Sabalenka. Aryna was born on May 5, 1998, in Minsk, Belarus. She also has a sister, though not much information is available about her.
Aryna Sabalenka’s father, Sergey Sabalenka, was a former ice hockey player and a driving force behind her tennis journey. Tragically, he passed away in 2019 at the age of 43. Before his death, the two shared a heartfelt pact: Aryna would win two Grand Slam titles before turning 25. This was revealed in the Netflix series “Break Point” by Sabalenka.

Though he didn’t live to see it fulfilled, Sabalenka honored that promise in powerful fashion, clinching her second consecutive Australian Open title in 2024 and dedicating the victory to her late father.
Following her emotional win, Sabalenka paid tribute during her on-court speech:
“Of course he’s my biggest motivation. He’s been everything for me. But right now I have my mom, my sister, who is here with me, and I feel like I have to think about them. I just feel that he’s always with me. I’m very thankful for everything he did for me, and I think if it wasn’t for him I wouldn’t be here.”

Aryna Sabalenka’s mother, Yuliya Sabalenka, is a proud and supportive presence in her life. Active on Instagram under the handle @juliya_sabalenka, Yuliya often shares glimpses of her travels and cherished moments with her daughters.
In January 2023, after Aryna captured her first Australian Open title, Yuliya celebrated the moment by posting a photo of Aryna holding the trophy, captioned in Russian: “Мы тобой гордимся❤️❤️❤️,” which translates to “We are proud of you.”

mma I’m an academic turned sports writer from Raipur, India, specializing in the NFL, MMA, and tennis at The Playoffs. I previously wrote for Sportskeeda and hold a B.A. and M.A. in History. My journey into sports media began far from the field, rooted in the arts and sciences. Funny enough, I didn’t grow up a sports fan; I used to see it all as just noise. But a fateful writing job introduced me to the world of sports, and what began as a gig quickly became a passion. I understood those voices aren’t noise; they’re emotions of true sports fans, and now I am one of them, writing with the same energy I once questioned.
