Let's dive into an exciting rivalry between Sabalenka and Gauff ahead of French Open 2025 Final.

Aryna Sabalenka and Coco Gauff was in action for the 2023 US Open final rematch when they battled out for the Roland Garros title glory on Saturday. Coco Gauff repeated the 2023 US Open again and won her second Grand Slam with a three-set victory. It was a battle between world’s top 2 players in the WTA rankings. Both players came through a dominant clay-court campaign and arrived for the ultimate trophy at world’s biggest clay competition. It was their 11th meeting overall and both players had five victories each before the French Open final.

Sabalenka’s season has been extra-ordinary and the Belarusian ace is proving why she is No. 1 tennis player in the world. She beat four-time Roland Garros champion, Iga Swiatek in the semifinal and didn’t drop a single out throughout the competition. Over the last one and half years, Sabalenka has reached 14 finals, including three Grand Slams. Before arriving in the French Open 2025 final, she won this year’s Australian Open and the last year’s US Open. She won the opening set 7-6 but couldn’t sustain in the second set as Gaff bounced back with a 6-2 win. Match went into final set and it was a toe-to-toe finish where Gauff had the final laugh.

Coco Gauff, on the other side, was playing her second Roland Garros final as the American ace lost the previous one in 2022 against Iga Swiatek. However, she changed the story this time and won her first-ever French Open title. Gauff beat Bouzkova in tie-break, made a classic comeback against Keys in quarterfinals, thrashed in-form Boisson in the semifinals and held the nerves in the final against Sabalenka.

Before meeting in the French Open final, the US No. 1 played five finals since the start of 2024 and lost four of them, including the Madrid Open final against Sabalenka. Coco had the laugh in a battle of nerves and long rallies.

Sabalenka vs. Gauff Rivalry – A Detailed Analysis

Aryna Sabalenka and Coco Gauff are currently the No. 1 and No. 2 players in the WTA rankings. Both have produced one of the exciting rivalry in the women’s tennis. Sabalenka and Gauff have gone head-to-head 11 times. The American ace holds the 6-5 lead over world No. 1. Out of 11 matches, six were played on high court and three were played on clay. Before arriving in the French Open final, they have shared one match each on the clay surface.

2025 French Open Final

Coco Gauff and Aryna Sabalenka met each other in their third Grand Slam meeting where the American ace had the last laugh. Gauff dropped the opening set but pulled off a comeback to take next two sets and won her first Roland Garros title. She takes a 2-1 lead over Sabalenka on clay court and regained the 6-5 lead in the H2H meetings.

2025 Madrid Open, Final

Madrid Open final is the most recent meeting between Aryna Sabalenka and Coco Gauff. It was also their first meeting as the No. 1 and No. 2 players in the final. Sabalenka won her third title of the year by overcoming the American ace in straight sets. Their final set went into tie-break and the Belarusian ace won the title. It remains the only clay-court victory for Sabalenka over Gauff.

2024 WTA Finals – Riyadh, Semifinals

Coco Gauff edged out Aryna Sabalenka 7-6(4) 6-3 in the semifinal in Riyadh to secure first victory of 2024. The American ace went on to win the title for the first time after beating Qinwen Zheng in the final. Both players played 57 points. Gauff won 13 points more than Sabalenka (35-22). The US No. 1 conceded 17 points on serve (18-17) and Sabalenka conceded 17 points on serve (5-17).

2024 Wuhan Open, Semifinals

Aryna Sabalenka defeated Coco Gauff in the semifinals of Wuhan Open 1-6, 6-4, 6-4. The Belarusian ace lost the first set badly but she pulled off a comeback to reach the Finals for the first time. Sabalenka beat Zheng Qinwen in the final to win her second WTA 1000 Masters title of the year.

2024 Australian Open, Semifinals

Defending champion Aryna Sabalenka dispatched Coco Gauff 7-6(2), 6-4 in the semifinals of 2024 Australian Open. It was their second Grand Slam matchup and the Belarusian ace took a revenge of the US Open final loss in 2023. Sabalenka went on to claim her third Australian Open title by beating Qinwen Zheng in the final.

2023 US Open, Final

This is the most memorable matchup between Sabalenka and Gauff. Both stars met in the 2023 US Open final where Gauff had the last laugh. Gauff came from behind to win the match in three sets and won her first ever Grand Slam title. With this win, the American ace took a 4-2 lead in the WTA H2H meetings.

2023 BNP Paribas Open – Indian Wells, Quarterfinal

It was the first time when both players met on a higher stage of the 1000 Masters event. Aryna Sabalenka dispatched Coco Gauff in straight sets to reach the semifinals of the 2023 Indian Wells. The Belarusian ace finished as the runner-up of the competition as she lost to Rybakina in straight sets.

2022 National Bank Open – Toronto, Round of 16

Coco Gauff extended her H2H lead to 3-1 after a third-round victory against Aryna Sabalenka in the 2022 National Bank Open in Toronto. It was an excellent season for the American ace as she played the Roland Garros final in the same year where she lost to world No. 1 Iga Swiatek.

2021 Internazionali BNL d’Italia – Rome, Round of 16

For the first time, Aryna Sabalenka and Coco Gauff faced each other in the 1000 Masters. The Belarusian ace won her first ever match against Coco Gauff after two back-to-back defeats. Sabalenka overcame the American ace 7-5, 6-3 in the round of 16 of the competition.

2020 J&T Banka Ostrava Open – Ostrava, Second Round

Coco Gauff maintained her H2H record over Aryna Sabalenka with a 1-6, 7-5, 7-6(2) victory in the second round of the 2020 J&T Banka Ostrava Open. The American ace came through the qualifiers and Sabalenka was the third-seeded player in the event.

2020 Top Seed Open – Lexington, Second Round

Coco Gauff and Aryna Sabalenka played for the first time in the 2020 Top Seed Open where Gauff had the last laugh. The American ace outclassed the second-seeded player in a three-set thriller. Their first set went into tie-break and Coco won it. However, Sabalenka came back to force the third set. Gauff took the final set 6-4 to secure a victory.
