Where did Patrick Mahomes play college football?

Devavrat Kulkarni

Kansas City Chiefs star Patrick Mahomes needs no introduction at this point of his stellar career. Ever since he entered the league, he has taken over the baton from former legend Tom Brady and has already carved out his own legacy.

Mahomes has taken this Chiefs’ team to unprecedented heights. The same Kansas City team that used to regularly miss the playoff or get knocked out in the first or second round of the postseason now has Super Bowl expectations every year. The fans are spoiled to the point that a loss before the AFC Championship Game has been unheard of for the past seven consecutive years.

Even the casual NFL fan is well aware of what Mahomes has done in the NFL. At the young age of just 29, Mahomes has ticked almost every important box that most players can never reach throughout their entire careers. A three-time Super Bowl Champion, three-time Super Bowl MVP, and a two-time MVP are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to his professional career.

But, what most people may not know is how Mahomes performed during his college career. And that is exactly what we are about to discover in this article.

Patrick Mahomes College

Patrick Mahomes played three years of collegiate football at Texas Tech University where he played the quarterback position on the Texas Tech Red Raiders’ football team. As a freshman, Mahomes started 4 games and took the field in 7. He was primarily the backup that season, but he still finished the year with 1,547 yards, 16 touchdowns, and 4 interceptions. He finished with a 1-3 record.

He then began his sophomore career as the starting quarterback and had 10 games where he threw for over 350 yards, out of which 4 of them went for over 400 yards. He ended the year with a 7-6 record in which he threw for 4,653 yards, 36 touchdowns, 15 interceptions, and 10 rushing touchdowns.

Mahomes’ final year of college was his junior year where once again he was the starter. He had several big games and finished the year with 5,052 passing yards, 41 touchdowns through the air, 10 interceptions, and 12 touchdowns on the ground.

Did Patrick Mahomes Win The Heisman?

The Heisman Trophy is awarded every year to the best player at the collegiate level for the recently concluded college football season. This is an individual award that celebrates the outstanding achievements of players who have put up astronomical numbers and won most of their games.

When it comes to Patrick Mahomes and his collegiate football career at Texas Tech, he had nearly every stat in his favor. Mahomes’ three seasons with the Texas Tech Red Raiders football team yielded 11,252 passing yards, 93 passing touchdowns, 29 interceptions, and 22 rushing touchdowns. These numbers were surely good enough to be considered for the prestigious award, especially in his junior year.

There was, however, just one problem. Mahomes had a losing record during his freshman and junior years while in his sophomore year, Texas Tech finished just barely above .500 at 7-6. The Heisman Committee generally tends to ignore players with such bad win-loss records despite the fact Mahomes was doing everything in his power to guide the team to victory.

Thus, forget about actually winning the Heisman, the three-time Super Bowl Champion was never even considered in the top three or top five players in any of his college seasons.

I am a content writer for the NFL team, and joined The Playoffs after working with Sportskeeda and NFL Analysis as an NFL writer. After starting my professional career as a French-to-English translator, working as a content writer is a new adventure for me. I started out in the sports media field for two main reasons: my love for sports in general, especially the NFL, NBA, and Tennis, as well as my passion for writing. The best part of this job is that I get to write a variety of pieces with the freedom to explore content from various angles. It also enables me to stay up to date with the sporting world, which otherwise can be difficult to do in the day-to-day grind. In a world full of chaos, sports unite and entertain like nothing else!
