It seems like yesterday that the 2024 NFL season got underway, yet it is that time of the year again when we are just one game away from the grand finale. Super Bowl LIX is upon us and within a week the Kansas City Chiefs will lock horns against the Philadelphia Eagles as they look to achieve the first-ever three-peat in the Super Bowl era.
Should the Chiefs go on to do just that, it will be a first for this league, but this is not the only record at stake in the upcoming week. Here is a list of some notable Super Bowl records from the past that could end up being broken this time around.
Most Passing Yards in a Single Super Bowl
The record for the most passing yards in a single Super Bowl is currently held by legendary former quarterback Tom Brady, who threw for a whopping 505 yards. Brady set this record while playing for the New England Patriots against the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LII. Shockingly, despite Brady’s monumental effort, the Patriots fell to the Eagles by a score of 41-33, even though Philadelphia played with their backup quarterback, Nick Foles.
Even though records are meant to be broken, this one looks like it will survive one more year at the very least considering that the two teams in this year’s big game don’t have a lights-out passing game this year. The defending champions, Kansas City Chiefs’ offensive struggles are well known and they have reached this far by doing just about enough on the offensive side of the ball in most of their games.
On the other hand, the Eagles have been carried on the back of their unstoppable run-game featuring Saquon Barkley. Jalen Hurts did have a big game in his last Super Bowl, but his dual-threat ability as well as the Eagles reliance on the run game should mean that Brady’s record is safe for the time being.
Most Passing Touchdowns in a Single Super Bowl
Super Bowl XXIX between the San Francisco 49ers and then San Diego Chargers was a fun one for the fans. The 49ers came out on top with a score of 49-26 on the back of 6 passing touchdowns by 49ers’ quarterback Steve Young. Young remains the player with the most passing touchdowns in a single Super Bowl and it will take a herculean effort for anyone to match or better this record as well.
Once again, this record seems like it will stand the test of time this year as the Chiefs haven’t come close to that many touchdowns for the entire year. As for the Eagles, they get a ton of their touchdowns from Barkley and Jalen Hurts with the tush-push.
Most Rushing Yards in a Single Super Bowl
A lop-sided Super Bowl XXII saw the then-Washington Redskins run all over the Denver Broncos sealing a 42-10 victory backed by an impeccable rushing display from running back Timmy Smith who had 204 rushing yards from 22 carries for an average of 9.27 yards per carry. To date, Smith is the only player to rush for over 200 yards in a single Super Bowl.
In the upcoming game, should the Eagles rely completely on their ground game and pound their way through the Chiefs’ defense, then look for Saquon Barkley to have a monstrous game. Although 204 yards is no easy feat, one can put this record past Barkley looking at the form he is in this year.

Most Receiving Yards in a Single Super Bowl
Jerry Rice, who is probably the best wide receiver to have played in the NFL, currently holds the record for the most receiving yards in a single Super Bowl. Rice caught 11 passes for 215 yards in Super Bowl XXIII, helping the 49ers win yet another Lombardi Trophy by beating the Cincinnati Bengals 20-16.
Once again, this record looks to be in safe hands this year as neither team has the passing game in which one receiver would be able to cross 200 receiving yards. The Eagles do, however, possess two brilliant pass catchers in the form of A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith who could have big games.
Most Touchdowns Scored in a Single Super Bowl
There are 6 different players tied for the most touchdowns scored in a single Super Bowl. This list does not include quarterbacks who threw for touchdowns. Roger Craig in Super Bowl XIX, Jerry Rice in Super Bowls XXIV and XXIX, Rickey Watter in Super Bowl XXIX, Terrell Davis in Super Bowl XXXII, James White in Super Bowl LI, and Jalen Hurts in Super Bowl LVII are all tied with 3 touchdowns to their names.
Looking at this year’s game, this might be one of the easier records to be broken especially with Jalen Hurts getting quite a few tush push plays from near the goal line and Saquon Barkley who could find the endzone on multiple occasions.
As for the Chiefs, they generally tend to score through a variety of ways and players which means a Kansas City player breaking this record seems bleak.
Most Sacks in a Single Super Bowl
The only defensive record on this list features the most sacks in a single Super Bowl and that record is held by four different players. Reggie White in Super Bowl XXXI, Darnell Dockett in Super Bowl XLIII, Kony Ealy in Super Bowl 50, and Grady Jarrett in Super Bowl LI each have 3 sacks in the biggest game of the year.
This last record is also another one that has a slim chance of being broken. Neither of the two teams in this year’s Super Bowl boast of outstanding numbers by a player as far as sacks are concerned.
The leading candidates for the Eagles are Josh Sweat, Nolan Smith, and Jalen Carter while the Chiefs have Chris Jones and George Karlaftis in their ranks. Yet, it does not seem as if any of them would be able to register more than 3 sacks come Sunday.
