Why Did Tallon Griekspoor Retire Against Alexander Zverev? How Long Will He Be Sidelined?

Tallon Griekspoor made a solid start to the game and won three straight games to take a commanding 3-0 lead. Zverev responded with a fearless approach and took the first set 6-4. Griekspoor looked in pain during the second set but still forced himself to continue the game. Zverev had a 3-0 lead when the Dutchman decided to leave the game.

In the third game of the second set, Griekspoor made three straight errors, including a missed overhead. Later, the Dutchman called for his physiotherapist. After a brief discussion, he retired from the match. It was dream run for him in the 2025 French Open but it ended like this. Ranked No. 35 in the ATP rankings, Griekspoor will now prepare for the season’s third Grand Slam. The injury looks not so serious and we can see him back in the Wimbledon later in the month.

Griekspoor had a tough assignment as the Dutchman posted a 0-8 record in Grand Slams against the top-20 players. This is the second time when Zverev walked out as happy person against Griekspoor in the Roland Garros. Last year, they played a five-set thriller and the German ace clinched the game after going 1-4 down in the final set. Zverev now holds the 8-2 record over the Dutch rivals in the ATP H2H meetings.

Alexander Zverev made it into his 15th major quarterfinal and also became only the fifth player to reach the quarterfinals for the fifth straight year. The German No. 1 will take on either Cameron Norrie or Novak Djokovic in the 2025 Roland Garros quarterfinals. He will get enough rest of around 48 hours to prepare for the potential clash against the 24-time Grand Slam winner.
