This is the first time Rune lost to Musetti after beating the Italian ace twice.
Lorenzo Musetti defeated Holger Rune 7-5, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 in the fourth round of the 2025 Roland Garros and reached the quarterfinals for the first time in his career. It was completely a dominating performance for Musetti, who clinched his second major quarterfinal appearance. The Italian ace secured his fifth top-10 victory of the season and proved why he belongs at the top.
The Italian eighth seed beat Holger Rune in a four-set thriller that lasted three hours and 18 minutes on Court Philippe Chatrier. The 23-year-old will take on Frances Tiafoe for a spot in the semi-finals, after the American ace earlier beat Germany’s Daniel Altmaier in straight sets. Musetti becomes the 10th Italian men’s player to reach the French Open quarterfinals in the Open Era.

World No. 7, Musetti entered with a 0-2 record against Rune in the ATP Head2Head meetings. The Italian ace made a stunning start and won the opening set 7-5 but Rune responded in the second set with a 6-3 scoreline. Musetti carved out two break points in the opening game of the third set and took the set 6-3. In fourth set, the pressure was mounting on Rune and the Italian No. 2 wrapped up the game on serve with an ace.
Final two sets were purely dominated by Musetti through his impressive single-handed backhand. Rune responded with an aggressive game plan with frequent net charges but failed to force the decider in the crucial matchup.

This is the first time Rune lost to Musetti after beating the Italian ace twice. It also marked Musetti’s first top-10 victory in the Grand Slams and fifth this year. Musetti arrived in Paris having reached at least the semi-finals in all three Masters events this season on clay.
“It’s incredible, yesterday night I was dreaming about playing like this. I had to raise the level as Holger is a fantastic player,” said Musetti on court.
Musetti will now face Frances Tiafoe in the quarterfinals. The American ace also reached his maiden quarterfinal and didn’t drop a single set throughout the competition. Tiafoe became the first American to reach the Roland Garros quarterfinals without losing a set since Andre Agassi in 1995. This is also the first time when two Americans (including Tommy Paul) will be in the last-8 of the French Open since 1996.
