Steven Gerrard Turns Down Rangers Job but Keeps Door Open for Future Comeback

Abhinav Goel

Steven Gerrard has declined the opportunity to make a return to Rangers, with timing understood to be the key reason behind the Liverpool legend’s decision. The former Liverpool and England captain held constructive talks with the Scottish Premiership side earlier this week following the dismissal of Russell Martin on Sunday.

While discussions were positive, both Gerrard and the club agreed that a reunion was not right at this stage. Sources suggest the 45-year-old remains open to managing Rangers again in the future, but a comeback will have to wait.

Gerrard, who managed Rangers between 2018 and 2021, famously led the club to their first Scottish Premiership title in a decade during the 2020–21 season, ending Celtic’s dominance. After his successful spell in Glasgow, he moved to Aston Villa but was dismissed after less than a year in charge.

He later managed Saudi Pro League side Al-Ettifaq before leaving the role in January 2025 after an 18-month tenure. Although Gerrard has recently expressed a desire to return to management, he chose to withdraw from the interview process on Saturday, citing concerns about the timing.

Rangers Continue Managerial Search

Rangers, meanwhile, continue their search for a new head coach after a difficult start to the season under Russell Martin. The club currently sits eighth in the Scottish Premiership table, with only one win from their opening seven matches. Their next fixture sees them host Dundee United next Saturday. Among the leading candidates to replace Martin is Danny Rohl, the former Sheffield Wednesday boss.

Rohl has reportedly impressed Rangers’ hierarchy during discussions and remains a strong contender. He was initially approached by the club during the summer before Martin’s appointment. Rangers’ new leadership team, led by chairman Andrew Cavenagh and vice-chairman Paraag Marathe, continues to evaluate options. The club remains determined to appoint the right long-term candidate to restore stability at Ibrox.
