Another international break and another injury for Barcelona. This time, midfielder Dani Olmo has withdrawn from the Spain squad after sustaining a muscle injury. Reportedly, it could jeopardize his participation in the upcoming El Clasico.
He joins Lamine Yamal in the list of uncertainties for the first Clasico of the season. The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) confirmed that Olmo will return to Catalonia after being ruled out of World Cup qualifiers against Georgia and Bulgaria.
Spain coach Luis de la Fuente commented on the matter saying, “[Olmo] arrived at the training camp last Monday with signs of muscle fatigue, as reported by FC Barcelona.” The statement added that Olmo’s condition initially improved with treatment.

However, he later felt “muscle discomfort in his left leg” during a controlled training session. This led to further tests that revealed a muscle injury. Olmo featured in Barcelona’s brutal 4-1 defeat to Sevilla before he joined the national side.
He will now begin his recovery in Spain’s camp before traveling back to Barcelona for further evaluation. Neither Spain nor the club has yet provided a timeline for his recovery. Early reports indicate that the midfielder could face a three-week spell on the sidelines.
Reports from Catalunya Radio suggest growing frustration within Barcelona regarding how the RFEF managed Olmo’s situation. Club doctors had reportedly warned them that the player was dealing with muscle fatigue prior to joining the national team. However, despite this, Olmo continued to train until he was forced to stop due to discomfort.
Journalist Roger Arbusa reported that Barca officials “do not understand how this report was ignored.” This added to a string of recent tensions between the two camps. The incident follows controversy over the handling of Lamine Yamal’s fitness in September. That had already strained relations between the club and the national setup.

Olmo’s setback adds to a growing injury list for Hansi Flick. He is already having to manage without key players such as Raphinha, Gavi, Ter Stegen, and Lamine Yamal. They have crucial fixtures against Girona, Olympiacos, and Real Madrid on the horizon.
Hence, Barcelona cannot afford any further absences. Additionally, they are trailing Real Madrid by three points in La Liga. If Olmo’s potential absence from El Clasico prove decisive, it could see La Blaugrana descend further down the table at this point.
