Jordi Alba has announced that he will retire from professional football at the end of Inter Miami’s ongoing MLS campaign. He is set to join his close friend and former Barcelona teammate Sergio Busquets as both have decided to hang up their boots.
The 36-year-old confirmed the decision through a heartfelt social media post. He announced the end of a career that has spanned nearly two decades. Alba posted a farewell message on Instagram, saying, “The time has come to close a truly meaningful chapter of my life.”

He added, “I do so with complete conviction, with peace, and with happiness. I feel I’ve walked this path with every ounce of passion I had.” The announcement surprised many, possibly including his teammates at Inter Miami as Alba had signed a contract extension in May 2025.
The new contract was supposed to keep him at the MLS club until 2027. Having joined the club in 2023 alongside Lionel Messi and Busquets, Alba quickly became a vital part of Miami’s setup. He has since helped them secure the Leagues Cup and Supporters’ Shield.

Inter Miami confirmed Alba’s retirement plans in an official statement. They praised his influence both on and off the pitch. managing owner Jorge Mas said, “Jordi has been an exceptional addition to Inter Miami and one of the standout players in Major League Soccer over these two seasons.”
He added, “He has been a great asset within the team and an exemplary professional. Jordi will forever be part of our Inter Miami family.” Reflecting on his decision, Alba said via the club’s website: “This has been a thoughtful decision I’ve considered for a long time.”

He added, “I feel it’s the right moment to begin a new personal chapter and enjoy time with my family after so many demanding years in football.” A key figure in Barcelona’s golden era, Alba won six La Liga titles, five Copas del Rey, and the 2015 Champions League.
Internationally, the Spanish defender earned 93 caps for Spain. He won the Euro 2012 and the UEFA Nations League with his national team. As Inter Miami enter the MLS Cup playoffs, Alba will look to add one final trophy to a glittering legacy before stepping away from the game.
