Will the Russian put an end to another American’s Charleston 2025 campaign?
One of the talking points of the 2025 Charleston Open has been the renaissance of former Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin. Possessing an innate knack of performing extraordinarily in front of her home fans, Kenin has reached the quarterfinal of the South Carolina based event. She will face Anna Kalinskaya – who caused a monumental upset by beating Madison Keys in the Round of 16.
All eyes were on Credit One Stadium’s first night session match on Thursday, when reigning Australian Open champion Madison Keys took to court. However, fans were left dumbfounded when a series of elegant drop shots by Kalinskaya left the American searching for answers. The Russian left no stone unturned in a dominant 6-2 6-4 victory. This was Keys’ second straight shock loss, having been outplayed in Miami too.

As for Kenin, a First Round thumping over southpaw Bernarda Pera was followed by two pleasant surprises against seeded players. The American is yet to drop a set in Charleston so far, and could achieve a significant jump in the rankings if she can make it to the final four. She is 4-4 on clay over the past year. After a forgettable 0-6 0-6 loss to Coco Gauff in Miami, it has been a quick turnaround for the 26-year-old.
Sofia Kenin and Anna Kalinskaya are yet to face each other on the WTA Tour. Their head to head stands at 0-0, and the 2025 Charleston Open quarterfinal is scheduled to be the maiden meeting between the duo.

Kenin has a narrow edge over Kalinskaya when it comes to service games won on clay over the past 12 months – she has won 65.2% in comparison to Anna’s 62.8%. Both of them were defeated by American Top-5 players in the Miami Open (Gauff and Pegula respectively).

Despite Kenin’s epic rise in form, it is going to take a ginormous effort to beat someone like Kalinskaya at the moment. Having claimed that her win over Keys was “special” and has brought her season back on track, the former World No. 11 is peaking at the right time. We predict Kalinskaya to go further in the competition this year.
Prediction: Anna Kalinskaya in straight sets.
Sofia Kenin Win: 5/6
Anna Kalinskaya Win: 6/5
