The Charleston Open quarterfinals are scheduled for Friday.
Third seed Zheng Qinwen resumes her surge for a third clay court title over the past 12 months, when she takes on the dangerous Ekaterina Alexandrova in the Charleston Open quarterfinals. The Russian, currently playing under the neutral banner, brushed aside sixth seed Diana Shnaider in the Round of 16. Meanwhile, Zheng huffed and puffed to a 6-3 3-6 6-3 win over Elise Mertens to enter the final eight.
Qinwen has a winning record of 17-4 on this surface, in the year gone by. She is the reigning Olympic champion in Paris – achieving the magnificent feat on the hallowed red dirt of Roland Garros. Just like a plethora of her fellow Charleston Open quarterfinalists, Qinwen was eliminated by Aryna Sabalenka in the recently concluded Miami Open.
30-year-old Alexandrova is searching for her sixth WTA Tour title. A former Top-15 player, the Russian is now No. 26 in the world. Despite two losses in her opening matches at Indian Wells and Miami, Alexandrova has yet to lose more than three games in a set in Charleston so far. Having beaten the biggest names in the game in the past, Friday presents another opportunity for Ekaterina; and her past record will boost her confidence.
Ekaterina Alexandrova leads the head to head rivalry against Zheng Qinwen 2-0 so far. Their last meeting was back in 2023.
Qinwen and Alexandrova are yet to face one another in 2024 or 2025. A pair of big servers with a phenomenal forehand to back it up, clay being their most efficient surface is arguable. Having been the lower ranked seed during their previous meeting, Alexandrova needed three sets to get the better of the Chinese superstar.

Considering Alexandrova’s past record, it will not be a big surprise if the Russian makes in-roads vs higher ranked players like Zheng. However, we still believe the Chinese prodigy will edge out this exhilarating battle, and make her way into the semifinal stage. The winner of this match will face either Jessica Pegula or Danielle Collins.
Prediction: Zheng Qinwen in straight sets.
