The Round of 16 battles at Charleston commence on Thursday.
Defending champion Danielle Collins takes on former Roland Garros champion Jelena Ostapenko in the Charleston Open Round of 16 on Thursday. In a match-up that is hard to call, especially on clay, there will be no shortage of flat powerful groundstrokes when the 7th seed takes on the 11th seed. Moreover, they are both coming out of disappointing outings at the Miami Open.
Danielle Collins managed a comfortable 6-3 6-1 victory over Robin Montgomery in Round-2, winning 80% of the points on her first serve. She is one of seven Americans looking to reach the last eight, and will be determined to defend her crown. Collins lost to two quality players in the form of Elina Svitolina and Aryna Sabalenka at the Sunshine Double events.

With a 6-5 record on clay over the past year, Jelena Ostapenko is in need of some momentum. The Latvian is also the top seed in the women’s doubles section, and has been touted as the firm favourite alongside partner Erin Routliffe. In Miami, she lost to rising star Alexandra Eala in straight sets. She also teamed up with Ellen Perez in women’s doubles, but came up short in the Round of 32.
The head to head record between Danielle Collins and Jelena Ostapenko stands at 2-1 in favour of the Latvian former World No. 5. Their most recent encounter was back in 2023.
While Jelena Ostapenko won the first two battles against Danielle Collins, the 31-year-old roared back with a thrilling win in San Diego. Their rivalry dates back all the way to Miami in 2018 – almost a year after ‘Penko’ had captured the Roland Garros singles crown. They are yet to meet in a final.

Although the match will be decided by the fine details, we expect the defending champion to tip the scales in her favour on Thursday. When it comes to two players who are fearless attackers, everything boils down to their execution on that particular day. Collins is the higher seed, and should edge her way into the quarterfinals.
Prediction: Danielle Collins in three sets.
A truly heartwarming moment in Charleston as a young fan, with a heck of a forehand, get's the chance to hit with last year's champ Danielle Collins. 😍
