They say April showers bring May flowers! Well in this case, the shower is the return of the hallowed clay court tennis and the flower is Roland Garros – where victory belongs to the most obstinate. After a power-packed month of March that was dominated by the Sunshine Double events, April promises a whole lot on the red dirt in Europe.
The 2025 season has already been a rollercoaster ride on the ATP Tour – Jannik Sinner romped to a second straight Australian Open title before getting suspended, Denis Shapovalov and Carlos Alcaraz found some lost form in Dallas and Rotterdam respectively, Joao Fonseca announced himself on the big stage, Jack Draper and Jakub Menšík won the biggest title of their career. But with the surface and rankings rapidly altering, the possibilities for April are endless.
Here is a detailed schedule of the ATP tournaments to look forward to in the month of April 2025:
Fayez Sarofim & Co. US Men’s Clay Court Championships
The US Men’s Clay Court Championship began in 1910 in Omaha. The 2025 competition will be the 55th edition of the event on the ATP Tour, and will be played on outdoor clay courts. It is the only ATP clay court event that is held in the United States of America, and currently takes place in Houston, Texas.

Grand Prix Hassan II
Starting off as an ATP Challenger in 1984 and then an ATP Tour event in 1990, the Grand Prix Hassan II is fully funded by Morocco’s King Mohammed VI. Having moved from Casablanca in 2016, it is now played on the outdoor clay courts of Marrakech, Morocco. This happens to be the only African pit-stop on the ATP circuit.

Tiriac Open
The longest running sports event in Romania, the Tiriac Open is named after one of their greatest players – Ion Tiriac. This will be the 23rd edition of the outdoor clay court event.

Rolex Monte Carlo Masters
The Monte Carlo Masters is the first of three ATP-1000 events that is played on clay. The tournament has a rich history, and celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2006. It is held in Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, which borders Monaco in France. Rafael Nadal is the most successful player in this competition, winning Monte Carlo a grand total of 11 times.
The Monte Carlo Masters was founded in 1896 as the Monte-Carlo International. It remained a combined men’s and women’s event until 1982, when the women’s competition ceased to exist. Often considered one of the best venues of the year, it is played on outdoor clay courts. Players participate in the French Masters event and move to other tournaments, before returning to France for Roland Garros.

Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell
Staged at the oldest tennis club in the country of Spain, the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell is one of the most highly anticipated competitions in Catalonia across the year. As expected, Rafael Nadal holds the record for most titles at the event – having 12 trophies in his cabinet.
The Barcelona Open was founded in 1953 as a combined men’s and women’s event. The event is locally known as the ‘Trofeo Conde de Godo’, and is played on outdoor clay courts. The year 2025 will mark its 72nd edition on the circuit.

BMW Open
The BMW Open (replacing its previous title of the Bavarian International Tennis Championships) is one of four German stops on the ATP calendar. It has been upgraded to an ATP-500 in 2025, and takes place at the Bavarian capital of Munich. The tournament is played on outdoor clay courts.
Originally a hard court event, the Mutua Madrid Open turned into one of the best clay court tournaments of the year in 2009. It is played on outdoor clay courts in the Spanish capital, and always takes place towards the end of April. A mixed competition, the Madrid Open is a 1000 event on both men’s and women’s tours.
Although it has always been a red clay tournament, the Mutua Madrid Open was played on blue clay during the 2012 season. It was founded in 2002 which makes this the 23rd edition of the Masters event. Former ATP star Ion Tiriac owned the tournament between 2009-2021, and revealed that the Madrid Open brought profits of over €100 million to the city.
Rafael Nadal has won the Mutua Madrid Open a record five times, closely followed by ‘Big-3’ rivals Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic – three times each.
