Czech prodigy wins first ATP title in Miami.
Czech sensation Jakub Mensik stunned the world by defeating 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic in the Miami Open final on Sunday. On a night that he will never forget, the Next Gen ATP starlet announced himself on the big stage – denying Nole his 100th tour-level title in the process. After the win, Mensik made a rollicking statement for the future.
Jakub Mensik was a major underdog coming into the tournament, having lost in Round-2 at Indian Wells. He also played an ATP Challenger before heading to the Florida-based event, and came up short in the semifinal stage. Nonetheless, Czechia’s next big thing produced one of the best performances of his career for a 7-6(4) 7-6(4) victory over Djokovic. Post the triumph, Mensik wrote “#1st of many’ on the camera lens – and his fans will hope that’s true.
By lifting the Miami Open title, Mensik became the second youngest titlist in the tournament’s rich history – only behind Carlos Alcaraz. The fact that he idolized Djokovic all his life would have made the moment only more special. “To be honest I don’t know what to say. It feels incredible obviously,” Mensik excitedly said in his post-match interview.

“It was probably the biggest day of my life and I did super, which I’m really glad [about].” He also spoke to the media about the realisation kicking in late. “It means a lot, that’s for sure all I’m saying. The feelings will come a little bit later, but even now, I’m starting to realise that it was incredible – all the two weeks actually. My game was getting better and better. Winning tonight against Novak in the tiebreaks feels crazy, incredible!”
A long rain delay in Miami meant that the men’s singles final was delayed by nearly six hours on Sunday. But instead of crumbling under the pressure, the 19-year-old showed no signs of rust when he stepped out on court. Born in September 2005 when Djokovic had already entered the ATP Top-100, Mensik grabbed the bull by its horns.
Despite Novak Djokovic having the best tiebreaker record on tour, Mensik managed to overcome the challenge to become just the fourth player to win their first title at a Masters-1000. Djokovic, who was struggling with an eye issue, succumbed to a 0-3 deficit before eventually breaking back. Struggling on the return games due to Mensik’s powerhouse serve, the first set went into a tiebreak.
Racing to a 5-0 lead, it looked like Mensik would cruise to grab the opener. But like Novak always does, he pulled back to a gap of two. Unfortunately, it was too big of a deficit – the teenager put away an overhead and took the first set. While the Serb did manage to increase the pressure in Set-2, Mensik’s 77 win percentage on first serve only meant that history was beckoning.
Courtesy of the title, Jakub Mensik now rises to a career-high World No. 24 in the ATP Rankings on Monday.
