Jessica Pegula gets Revenge on Aryna Sabalenka after Losing Miami Open Final, Steals the “Marg-Aryna”

Sabalenka's superior shot-making dismantled Pegula's defense in a rematch of last year's US Open final.

Aryna Sabalenka won her maiden Miami Open title with a dominant 7-5, 6-2 victory against Jessica Pegula in the final. The three-time Grand Slam winner didn’t drop a single set across six matches. The Belarusian has solidified her position as the best player in the world on the WTA circuit. Her superior shot-making dismantled Pegula’s defense in a rematch of last year’s US Open final.

The Miami Open win is Sabalenka’s 19th career title and her eighth WTA 1000 crown. The 26-year-old tennis star becomes only the third WTA world No. 1 to reach the finals of the Australian Open, Indian Wells, and Miami Open in the same year. The Belarusian ace also leads the WTA Tour with 23 wins this year, ahead of Iga Swiatek (21) and Mirra Andreeva (20).

Jessica Pegula gets her revenge post Miami Open final, steals her Margarita!

After a dominant victory in Miami Open, world No. 1 Sabalenka was ready to celebrate with her signature margarita cocktail, dubbed the ‘Marg-Aryna.’ She was giving an interview in the courtside Tennis Channel studio with Martina Navratilova and Prakash Amritraj. All three kept taking sips of margarita cocktail.

Jessica Pegula, the defeated finalist, surprised the Miami Open winner and both hosts as she made her way to the studio, took a sip of Sabalenka’s Marg-Aryna during the interview and walked off with it. The three-time Grand Slam winner asked the studio staff to arrange another glass of drink and Amritraj offered his own drink to her.

The rivals from last year’s US Open final had a great relationship and the duo gushed about each other during the post-game ceremony.

“I really don’t want to like you right now, but you’re the best player in the world for a reason. You keep pushing everybody and challenging everybody to get better … the last month of tennis you’ve been able to play is amazing,” Pegula said during the trophy ceremony at Hard Rock Stadium.

“If I could share the trophy with someone, trophy, prize money, points, everything, Jess, I would definitely share it with you,” Sabalenka replied. “You’re an incredible player and you always push me to play my best … it’s always great matches, a great level of tennis.

Anguish for Jessica Pegula continues as she loses third WTA 1000 Final

At 26, Sabalenka is showcasing consistency, tactical maturity and resilience. She improved her mistakes from the Indian Wells final. Sabalenka had a slow start in the game as she struggled to hold serve in the first set. The first set was pretty competitive and Pegula was forcing a tight finish. Sabalenka delivered a flawless forehand drop and a superb down-the-line winner to take the set 7-5.

Later, the game became one-way traffic for the Belarusian ace, who didn’t drop a single set in the Miami Open this year. Pegula, the 2024 US Open runner-up, couldn’t counter Sabalenka’s relentless pace and heavy topspin in the second set. It was purely a dominance and Sabalenka thrashed the American defence with superior groundstrokes. She broke twice to go 3-1 up in the second set and later, wrapped up the game 7-5, 6-2 in one hour and 27 minutes.

Jessica Pegula, the world number four, lost her third WTA 1000 final. It was Pegula’s third clash against the Belarusian in the final of a prestigious event. Both faced each other in the final of 2024 Cincinnati Open, 2024 US Open and 2025 Miami Open. Sabalenka emerged victorious on all three occasions. The World No. 1 has stretched her head-to-head lead against Pegula, which now stands at 7-2.
