A closer look at Espinoza vs. Vazquez ahead of their May 4 title bout.
Undefeated since turning professional in 2013, Rafael Espinoza, 26-0, continues his climb in the featherweight division. The Mexican boxing standout captured the WBO featherweight title in December 2023 with a majority decision win over Robeisy Ramirez. He will defend it for the third time on Sunday, May 4, against Edward Vazquez at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. “El Divino” enters the bout on the back of three straight wins, two over Ramirez and one against Sergio Chirino Sanchez.
Vazquez, 17-2, is coming off a TKO victory over Kenneth Taylor. The Fort Worth native previously challenged Joe Cordina for the IBF junior lightweight title in November 2023, falling short by majority decision. His matchup against Espinoza marks his second shot at a world title.

The Espinoza-Vazquez clash is part of the main card headlined by Naoya Inoue vs. Ramon Cardenas for the undisputed super bantamweight championship. The event also features four additional bouts, including Emiliano Fernando Vargas vs. Juan Leon for the NABF Junior welterweight title.
Rafael Espinoza, the undefeated Mexican boxer, is the reigning WBO featherweight champion. After winning 11 amateur bouts, he turned professional in 2013, scoring a third-round knockout over Victor Valadez in his debut. Since then, Espinoza has remained unbeaten, reaching a career high in December 2023 when he stunned Robeisy Ramirez to capture the WBO title in what many considered a major upset.
“El Divino” went on to defend his belt against Sergio Chirino in June 2024, and in a highly anticipated rematch later that December, he handed Ramirez another loss, this time forcing a stoppage due to an eye injury.

Espinoza carries the nickname “El Divino,” a tribute to El Divino Rostro, a sacred image of Jesus Christ in his hometown of La Palma, Michoacan, Mexico. Before his professional debut, he prayed for victory at the shrine and has since embraced the name as a symbol of strength and faith throughout his boxing career.

He bounced back with a statement TKO victory over Kenneth Taylor, earning another shot at a world title, this time against WBO featherweight champion Rafael Espinoza.
