Oscar Piastri: The Next F1 World Champion? This Historic Stat Might Have Sealed the Deal

Devavrat Kulkarni

Will this season have any excitement or is it already over?

We are well and truly underway with the 2025 F1 season now that 6 races have taken place. McLaren has taken the season by storm, having already opened up a lead of more than 100 points over Mercedes in second place. Having won the past 4 Drivers and Constructors Championships, Max Verstappen and Red Bull have gotten off to a slower start than expected.

Although the season has just begun and there are still 18 more races to go, along with the remaining sprint races, there is plenty of time for other teams to turn things around. However, one stat seems to point out that the season may, in reality, already be over.

26 out of 27 Drivers Who Won 4 of the First 6 Races Became World Champions

As per the stats put up on the Instagram accounts ‘grandprix’ and ‘holinessf1’, the driver who has won 4 of the first 6 races has gone on to become the Champion at the end of the season 26 times out of 27 such seasons.

The only exception to this has been Niki Lauda during the 1976 season. Lauda, who raced for Ferrari, won the two races and the fifth and sixth races that year, but went on to lose the Drivers’ Championship by one point to McLaren’s James Hunt.

Oscar Piastri Has Won the First 4 of the 6 Races This Year!

If the above statistic has any weight to it, this would mean that McLaren’s Oscar Piastri has more than a considerable chance at winning his first-ever Drivers’ Championship by the time the season comes to an end in Abu Dhabi in December.

The Australian driver who made his F1 debut at the 2023 Bahrain Grand Prix has won 4 of the first 6 races this season. The 24-year-old reigned supreme in China, the second round of the 2025 F1 calendar after finishing 9th in the inaugural round in Australia. He then finished third in Japan and has since followed that up with three consecutive wins in Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, and, most recently, Miami.

The Only Man Who Poses a Threat to Piastri Is Teammate Lando Norris

Currently, after the first six races, Piastri leads the field with 131 points, which includes 5 podiums and 4 wins. With three wins on the trot, he has all the momentum going his way as we head to round 7 at Imola, Italy.

Second in the drivers’ championship is teammate Lando Norris, while 4-time Champion Max Verstappen is in third with 99 points. Both Norris and Verstappen have won one race each, but the British driver has 5 podiums as opposed to 3 for the Dutch. Mercedes’ George Russell is not far behind in 4th place with 93 points.

However, with the way the season is shaping up, McLaren has shown that they are the team to beat, and if this continues, the only real threat for Piastri will seemingly come from his teammate, Lando Norris.

I am a content writer for the NFL team, and joined The Playoffs after working with Sportskeeda and NFL Analysis as an NFL writer. After starting my professional career as a French-to-English translator, working as a content writer is a new adventure for me. I started out in the sports media field for two main reasons: my love for sports in general, especially the NFL, NBA, and Tennis, as well as my passion for writing. The best part of this job is that I get to write a variety of pieces with the freedom to explore content from various angles. It also enables me to stay up to date with the sporting world, which otherwise can be difficult to do in the day-to-day grind. In a world full of chaos, sports unite and entertain like nothing else!
