Maxx Crosby’s Reign at Top of Non-QB Contracts Cut Short As Myles Garrett Takes Over

Devavrat Kulkarni

Myles Garrett is the new king on top of the non-QB market!

The NFL’s player contracts are reaching new highs with each passing year. Not only is the salary cap increasing yearly, players are ultimately benefitting with better contracts. What once used to be a rare occurrence when player contracts would set new records has now become a thing of the past.

Gone are the days when players would prioritize winning a championship over money, as we tend to see so many athletes sign huge contracts earning them millions of dollars over the years. It is obvious teams want to keep their stars for years to come as they can build a team around them, but that hands the power to the players and the results are there for everyone to see.

What is taking place in the NFL right now is record-breaking contracts each offseason, and if that was not enough, we have just witnessed this year’s record get broken in a matter of days.

Maxx Crosby and Myles Garrett’s Contract Extensions

Just a few days ago, the Las Vegas Raiders signed their star defensive end Maxx Crosby to a three-year, $106.5 million deal that will see him earn $35.5 million per year. Crosby’s contract reset the NFL market for non-quarterbacks as the previous record was held by the Vikings’ wide receiver Justin Jefferson when he signed his 4-year deal worth $140 million just last year.

However, in a surprising move that came out of left field, Myles Garrett signed a 4-year contract extension with the Cleveland Browns just weeks after requesting a trade. What is more surprising is that Garrett’s extension did not just reset the NFL market for non-quarterbacks, but it has obliterated it. The 2023 NFL Defensive Player of the Year will now earn a whopping $40 million per year after he signed a 4-year deal worth $160 million.

Will Ja’Marr Chase or Micah Parsons Have the Last Laugh?

If you think you have seen it all this year following the extension of Myles Garrett, you are in for a rude awakening. At the rate at which player contracts are being handled nowadays, we may not have seen the last of this record-breaking deal. In line for big paydays are still Ja’Marr Chase and Micah Parsons who could have something to say before the offseason comes to a close.

The $40 million per year that Garrett has earned may be a struggle for Parsons and the Cowboys, considering the linebacker has to prove himself on the level of Garrett. However, Chase’s situation looks pretty good as he is without a doubt one of the leading receivers in the game today. What’s more, the Bengals have promised to make him the highest-earning non-QB in the league. So, don’t be surprised if this record continues to tumble as the days go by.

I am a content writer for the NFL team. I joined The Playoffs recently at the beginning of February after working with Sportskeeda and NFL Analysis as an NFL writer. However, this is a career change for me as previously I used to be a French to English translator. I started out in the sports media field because of two main reasons: my love for sports in general, especially the NFL, NBA, and Tennis as well as my passion for writing. I get to write a variety of pieces with the freedom to explore content from various angles. It also enables me to stay up to date with the sporting world which otherwise can be difficult to do in the day-to-day grind. In a world full of chaos, sports unites and entertains like nothing else!
