Big moves are happening this offseason in Seattle as the latest news out of the Seahawks camp is the release of wide receiver Tyler Lockett. But that is not all, as per reports, D.K. Metcalf has also asked for a trade looking for a way out of Seattle and it looks like the Seahawks are keen to grant him his wish.

Circling back to Lockett, the now 32-year-old has played all ten years of his career with the NFC West franchise where he earned First-Team All-Pro honors in 2015, his rookie season. Since then Lockett has been a consistent part of the Seahawks offense, striking a lethal partnership with Metcalf. The wideout put together 4 consecutive 1,000 yard seasons from 2019 to 2022, and now as he departs from Seattle, it is truly the end of an era.

Why Did The Seahawks Release Lockett?

The biggest reason the Seahawks are moving on from Lockett is the financial aspect. Seattle is looking to get cap compliant and Locket was due $17 million in 2025. Additionally, a $5.3 million roster bonus was also due on March 16. Retaining Lockett would have meant $30 million of cap space, but by releasing him they have saved $17 million.

Moreover, the Seahawks are now looking ahead to the future and that now belongs to Jaxon Smith-Njigba who will be entering his third season in 2025. Smith-Njigba has developed rapidly, contributing. He caught 100 passes in 2024 for 1,13o yards and 6 touchdowns. Production-wise, that was nearly double of Lockett.

Potential Landing Spots For Lockett In 2025

With the departure of Tyler Lockett from Seattle, the 32-year-old will continue his career elsewhere.

Las Vegas Raiders

A move to the Raiders is a potentially good option for both parties. Vegas needs to add quality in their wide receivers room as the only real threat they have at the moment is Jakobi Meyers. If they were to sign Lockett, he would instantly add a veteran presence, reliable pass-catching option, and leadership amongst the room. Moreover, he would be reunited with Pete Carroll who has already been signed as the head coach making it easier to fit into a new system.

Pittsburgh Steelers

Another destination that makes sense for Lockett is Pittsburgh. The Steelers need a solid number 2 to pair with George Pickens and who better than the former Seahawks’ receiver. The duo would make a nice little 1-2 punch for whoever is throwing the ball next season as nobody else on the Steelers looks like they can produce at a higher quality.

Denver Broncos

The Denver Broncos’ offense started to come alive toward the end of the 2024 season. With Sean Payton entering his third season, and quarterback Bo Nix heading into year 2, the Broncos could use a reliable WR2 to help them expand their offense. Last season, Cortland Sutton had a little over 1,000 receiving yards, but then the next best receiver was Marmin Mims with only 503. If they can add Lockett to the mix, Denver’s passing game could expand significantly.

Dallas Cowboys

The Dallas Cowboys could also be in the mix for Lockett’s services given that they are also short of wide receiver talent. CeeDee Lamb will be the mainstay of the Cowboys’ offense, but adding Lockett will alleviate some of the pressure on him as well as Dak Prescott. The Cowboys’ signal caller has just restructured his deal, which should allow some flexibility in cap space.
