Alexander Bublik has a tough task ahead in his quarter-final against Sinner
World number one, Jannik Sinner, continues his quest for a first title at Roland Garros as he takes on Alexander Bublik today in the quarter-finals. Nearing the fag end of the tournament, Sinner continues to display a high-level of tennis despite missing out on 3 months of action.
Bublik, meanwhile, has surprised quite a few with his run in the French capital thus far. A lot is at stake for both players, with the winner proceeding to play either Alexander Zverev or Novak Djokovic in the semi-final.
Sinner’s strong run at this year’s French Open, following his run to the final in Rome, just goes to prove why he is the number one player on tour presently. Lacking match practice and entering the year’s second Grand Slam with just a handful of matches on clay, the Italian’s level remains as high as ever.
Sinner has yet to drop a set so far and has cruised his way to victory in his matches thus far. He took out Arthur Rinderknech and home favorite Richard Gasquet in the first and second rounds, while making quick work of Jiri Lehecka and Andrey Rublev in the third and fourth rounds respectively.
Sinner has won 82% of his service games while saving 58% of break points faced on clay this year. However, his return stats are even more impressive, winning nearly 40% of the 56 return games he has played and converting on 47% of the break points.

As for Bublik, he is on an inspired run here in Paris after a season of several disappointments. In fact, following the Paris Olympics in 2024, Bublik went on a stretch where he lost 9 of his 11 matches, and since then hasn’t been at his best.
His best results this year have come on the Challenger circuit, winning a title in Turin and making the final in Phoenix, but he hasn’t had much success on the main tour. Despite that, the 27-year-old has looked good at Roland Garros, earning big wins against the likes of Alex de Minaur and Jack Draper along the way.
During the clay season, Bublik has excelled while serving, hitting 77 aces with a first serve percentage of 73%. He has won 80% of his service games while saving 65% break points. However, Bublik’s struggles have come while returning, winning just 13% of the 98 games he has played.

Jannik Sinner and Alexander Bublik have played each other 4 times prior to their meeting today. The Italian holds a 3-1 lead in their head-to-head, which started in 2021 in Dubai.
Sinner won the initial 3 matches in this rivalry, but the most recent meeting at Halle in 2023 went Bublik’s way. However, it is important to note that Sinner retired in the match due to an adductor muscle injury.
| Year | Event | Round | Winner | Score |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2023 | Halle | Quarterfinal | Alexander Bublik | 7-5, 2-0 RET |
| 2023 | ‘s-Hertogenbosch | Round of 16 | Jannik Sinner | 6-4, 6-2 |
| 2021 | ATP Masters 1000 Miami | Quarterfinal | Jannik Sinner | 7-6(5), 6-4 |
| 2021 | Dubai | Round of 32 | Jannik Sinner | 2-6, 7-6(2), 6-4 |
Sinner’s achievements on the court are miles ahead of what Bublik has been able to do. 19 titles, including 3 majors, and the world number 1 ranking, outweigh Bublik’s 4 titles, a career-best ranking of 17, with no Grand Slams on his resume.
| Jannik Sinner | Category | Alexander Bublik |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Ranking | 62 |
| 275-81 | Career W-L | 159-163 |
| 12-1 | YTD W-L | 7-13 |
| 19 | Career Titles | 4 |
| 3 | Grand Slams | 0 |
| 1 | YTD Titles | 0 |
Right now, the gulf in quality and form between the two players is quite a big margin. While Bublik’s run has been inspiring, he will be up against the world number one, who is chasing his maiden Roland Garros title.
Sinner’s excellent service and Bublik’s lack of ability to win games while returning will play a big role in today’s match. If Bublik can find a way to break the Italian and hold his own serve consistently, he is in with a slim chance.
Prediction: Sinner in straight sets
Both players are on opposite ends of the spectrum in terms of their recent consistency. Sinner’s 3-month ban has had no effect on his play, while Bublik is going through a long period of subpar play.
Sinner will put pressure on Bublik to consistently bring out his best serve, but the question is how long he can keep it up. The Italian’s superior play is also reflected in the betting odds that have him as a huge favorite leading up to this match.
Jannik Sinner Win: 1/100
Alexander Bublik Win: 16/1
