Garnacho had featured in every round of United’s European campaign leading up to the final and contributed one goal and four assists.
Alejandro Garnacho has cast doubt over his future at Manchester United following the club’s 1-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League final. The Argentine winger openly questioned manager Ruben Amorim’s decision to limit him to just 20 minutes of play in the biggest match of their season.
Notably, Garnacho had featured in every round of United’s European campaign leading up to the final and contributed one goal and four assists in 14 appearances. However, he was left on the bench in favour of Mason Mount, with the 20-year-old only introduced in the 71st minute of the final in Bilbao. The move backfired as Brennan Johnson’s first-half strike sealed Tottenham’s first major title in 17 years.
Garnacho has had an impressive individual season, registering 11 goals and 10 assists across all competitions. But he was visibly disappointed with manager Ruben Amorim’s decision to not start him in the final. After the match, Garnacho voiced his frustration,
“Up until the final I played every round helping the team, and today I play 20 minutes, I don’t know.”
“The final will influence [my decision] but the whole season, the situation of the club. I’m going to try to enjoy the summer and see what happens afterwards.”

Garnacho has been linked with Chelsea and Napoli in previous transfer windows. His brother, Roberto Garnacho, also took to social media in defence of the winger as he wrote, “Working as no-one else, helping every round, coming from two goals in the last two finals, just to be on the pitch for 19 mins and get thrown under the bus,” wrote Roberto Garnacho.

It’s not the first time Garnacho has found himself at the centre of controversy. Earlier in the season, he was dropped for poor training performances. He had to apologize to the squad after walking straight down the tunnel following a substitution. He also previously liked social media posts critical of then-manager Erik ten Hag, for which he later issued an apology.
The Red Devils are already guaranteed to finish in their lowest-ever Premier League position. They are currently sitting in 16th position with one game left in the league. This loss to Spurs marked United’s 20th defeat in all competitions. With frustrations growing and no European football next season, Garnacho’s future at Old Trafford is up in the air.
