We’re Very Sorry: Luke Shaw Issues Apology to Manchester United Fans

Abhinav Goel

Former Southampton defender Luke Shaw was directly involved in the decisive moment of the Europa League final.

Manchester United left-back Luke Shaw has delivered a heartfelt apology to the club supporters following the club’s 1-0 loss to Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League final in Bilbao. The result all but confirmed that United will miss out on European football next season. Overall, it has turned out to be one of the most disappointing campaigns in the club’s modern history.

The Red Devils are already guaranteed to finish in their lowest-ever Premier League position. They are currently sitting in 16th position with one game left in the league. This loss to Spurs marked United’s 20th defeat in all competitions. The Red Devil’s failure to win the Europa League not only denied United a route back into the Champions League but will also likely impact their summer transfer activity.

Are We Good Enough To Be Here: Shaw

Speaking after the match, Shaw didn’t hold back in assessing the condition of the club. The Englishman admitted that ‘United are at rock bottom’. He also questioned whether he and his teammates were “good enough to play for Manchester United”.

Shaw said,

“We’re very sorry for what they’ve had to go through this season. Like I said, it’s been nowhere near good enough and I can only apologise for that.”

“I think we have to look at the positives and the only positive thing is that we we can only go up from here. We’re rock bottom now, and we have to find a way to drag ourselves back and get back to where this club deserves to be.”

“I think for a club like Manchester United, it’s not really good enough. I think definitely me and I think all of us have to question ourselves tonight. Are we good enough to be here?”

“Because this club, this season, it’s not acceptable. We know that and it’s down to us. I think we have to look at ourselves. Something has to change.”

Shaw has spent nearly a decade at Old Trafford and the former Southampton defender was directly involved in the decisive moment of the Europa League final. Brennan Johnson’s scrappy goal in the first half took a heavy deflection off the England full-back, whch nearly resulted in an own goal. It proved to be the only goal of the game.
