Tom Aspinall has made it know that he wants to fight Jon Jones, and has been on every platform talking about his desire to fight the GOAT. While most fighters may duck somebody like Jones, who is still one of the greatest fighters of all time, Aspinall wants all the smoke. He knows that to be the best in your division, you have to beat the best, and Jones sits at the very top of the UFC heavyweight division.
Aspinall has everything you want in a UFC fighter, the swagger, the domination, the will to win, and the skills to compete. He has an overall record of 15-3-0 and has finished all of his 15 fights, with 11 coming via knockouts and 4 wins coming via submission. If not for Jones, he would easily be the best heavyweight fighter currently. Apart from his loss against Curtis Blaydes which he avenged in the rematch, he has won 8 of his 9 UFC fights so far.

Aspinall wants to put an end to Jon Jones’ reign as the heavyweight champion in the UFC, and desperately wants to fight for the heavyweight belt. The Brit has held the interim title belt for the heavyweight division since 2023, and even had to defend his interim belt in July of 2024. He clearly deserves a shot at the actual title, but Jon Jones is taking his own sweet time and has shown no interest in fighting the Brit so far.
There’s a couple of angles as to why Jones is avoiding Aspinall. Firstly, he wanted to fight an established fighter like Alex Pereira but Poatan recently lost against Magomed Ankalaev at UFC 313, which may have put a stop temporarily to a potential Jones vs Pereira showdown. The second reason, in our opinion, is that Jon Jones is closing in on Cain Velasquez for the longest-reigning UFC champion ever. Velasquez held the record for 896 days and Jones is already at 747 days, so add another five months and Voila! Maybe that’s why Jones asked for six months to prepare against Aspinall, which would put him at 915 days.

Lastly, Jon Jones wants to be paid a lot money if he is to take on Aspinall, and that is one of the biggest reasons why this fight hasn’t been announced yet. Jones wants a huge pay day, but many believe that he is asking for way too much. Recently, Aspinall showed support for Jones on his stance. Let’s see what he had to say.
Aspinall was recently asked to share his thoughts on the Ariel Helwani show, about Jones trying to price himself out of a fight, to which he replied,
“I would also agree with the notion that he deserves every penny that he makes because he’s done everything. He’s done everything that he can.”
Jones knows that Tom Aspinall is a dangerous fighter who could potentially defeat him. Not only is Bones’ title on the line but he’s also very close to retirement, and what better way is there to walk out of the UFC forever than with huge money and an epic showdown. Win or lose, Jones’ number one priority is most likely to make a lot of cash and once he’s done that, we may never see him inside the octagon again.

mma I cover the National Football League and things cannot get better than that. I always dreamed to play football or basketball professionally since I’m built like a Running Back. But now that I can’t, since I’m technically in the “Unc” age, I thought why not pick a career in sports industry? So here I am, doing what I love, and hoping that the Commanders win the Super Bowl. I give love to players when it’s due, but can be critical about their performances at the same time. Enough about me, now let my articles do all the talking.
