Two clay court giants; one trophy; confirmed first-time winner: Who will reign supreme?
Worlds will collide when top seed Aryna Sabalenka and two-time finalist Coco Gauff clash in the women’s singles final at Roland Garros 2025 on Saturday. Sabalenka is chasing a maiden title at the French capital, and holds an evenly poised 5-5 head to head record against her American counterpart. Meanwhile, Gauff played a near-perfect match against home favourite Lois Boisson in the semifinals, and has the momentum in her favour.
It will be a battle between relentless attacks and agile retrieval, when the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds meet for the 11th time in their WTA careers. Such is the contrasting beauty of their styles – the Belarusian enjoys short rallies and powerful winners; her 21-year-old prodigious opponent makes full use of her young legs to play a counter-attacking style of tennis.
Three-time Grand Slam champion Sabalenka is contesting her third consecutive final at a major – she is the first female player since Serena Williams in 2016 to do so. Her noteworthy victories in Paris this year have been against Amanda Anisimova, Paris Olympics champion Zheng Qinwen, and four-time queen of Roland Garros Iga Swiatek. Although her record in finals is bittersweet, a phenomenal clay court season and her 22-7 record at this event makes her a firm favourite.
Becoming the youngest player since 2009 to reach the finals in Madrid, Rome and Paris in the same calendar year, Coco Gauff has proven that her clay court game is among the best in the world. She is also just the fourth American woman to reach multiple French Open finals. The 2023 US Open champion will have a mighty test of endurance on Saturday. However, the fact that she has dropped only one set en route to the summit clash will play into her hands.
