Musetti’s semifinal surge ends in heartbreak as injury forces him to retire mid-match against Alcaraz.

Lorenzo Musetti’s dream run at Roland Garros came to a heartbreaking end in the semifinals, as the Italian was forced to retire early in the fourth set against Carlos Alcaraz due to a leg injury. The match, which had the potential to be an instant classic, ended with the scoreline reading 4-6, 7-6, 6-0, 2-0 in favor of the Spaniard.

Injury Halts Musetti’s Dream Run as Alcaraz Marches Into the Final

Musetti had taken the opening set with precision but began visibly struggling after the second, receiving treatment on his left leg and clearly hampered in movement, especially during longer rallies.

Alcaraz looked far from his usual self in the opening set with  erratic serves, rushed shot selection, and a noticeable lack of spin and margin. Musetti capitalized with clinical baseline play, particularly showcasing the backhand that has become his trademark.

But once the second set rolled in, so did the pressure. Though losing an early break, Alcaraz clawed his way back in an electrifying exchange of breaks, eventually seizing the tiebreak with a show of grit and relentless effort.

From there, the tide turned sharply. Alcaraz stormed through the third set with a bagel as Musetti’s physical discomfort became increasingly visible. The Italian tried to hang on, but trailing 2-0 in the fourth and unable to compete at full tilt, he called it quits, ending what had been his best-ever Grand Slam showing.

What’s Next for Lorenzo Musetti?

The extent of Musetti’s injury is yet to be disclosed, but the Italian will be hoping for a swift recovery with Wimbledon just around the corner. For now, though, he walks away from Paris with his head held high, having delivered the deepest Roland Garros run of his career and cementing his status as a major threat on clay.

But a fateful writing job introduced me to the world of sports, and what began as a gig quickly became a passion. I understood those voices aren’t noise; they’re emotions of true sports fans, and now I am one of them, writing with the same energy I once questioned.
