For the first time since 1984, both the men’s and women’s Roland Garros singles finals will feature both the world No. 1 and world No. 2.
Carlos Alcaraz advanced to the 2025 Roland Garros final after Lorenzo Musetti retired due to a thigh injury during the semi-final fixture on Friday. The Spaniard was leading in the game and during the fourth set, Musetti felt uncomfortable with his injury and decided to withdraw Court Philippe Chatrier.
Musetti and Alcaraz played for two hours and 25 minutes. The score was 4-6, 7-6(7/3), 6-0, 2-0 in favour of the four-time major champion. During the third set, Musetti received treatment on his thigh but he was struggling. Later, the Italian ace retired in the fourth set when Carlos was ahead 2-0.

Lorenzo Musetti started the semifinals on a high note and won the opening set 6-4. Carlos came back and took the second-set in tie-break. The Spaniard dominated the third set as he made a sweep in it. He won nine straight games against Musetti, who was struggling through an injury. With a 4-6, 7-6(7), 6-0, 2-0 victory in the semifinals, Alcaraz made it into the fifth Grand Slam and second Roland Garros final.
As Musetti walked off the court, Alcaraz was applauding his Italian rival. Both players hugged each other and Alcaraz expressed sympathy, saying, “It’s never great to go through or win a match when it’s like this. He’s done an incredible clay season. I wish him all the best, a quick recovery and that he’ll be back soon.”
The Spaniard is now the fifth-youngest player to reach five Grand Slam finals in the Open Era. He also became the third active male player to achieve the feat, joining Novak Djokovic (37) and Daniil Medvedev (6) in the elite list.
