The 2021 US Open champion Daniil Medvedev’s hard-court preparation is not going up to the mark as the Russian ace suffered a 6-7 (0-7) 6-4 6-1 defeat against Australia’s Adam Walton in the second round of the 2025 Cincinnati Open. The former world No. 1 has won just one match in two years in Cincinnati and Canada.

Former world No.1 and 2021 US Open champion Medvedev made a good start as he clinched the opening set in tiebreak. However, Walton produced a solid game display but failed to hold the nerves. The Aussie responded in style to take the second set 6-4. Third set was one-way traffic as Medvedev managed to win just one game and suffered a shocking defeat.
Meanwhile, the Russian ace was facing struggles with the conditions in Queen’s City and put his head in the ice fridge in the middle of the match. The Ohio heat tested Medvedev and the former champion faced a defeat in a battle of two-and-a-half hours. Walton now set up a third-round encounter with the 22nd seed, Jiri Lehecka.
Going into his match against Daniil Medvedev, Adam Walton had never beaten a top-50 opponent in 11 attempts.

Medvedev looked solid in the first set where he didn’t drop a point and hit 41 winners, including 18 aces. The Russian ace failed to adjust himself in the condition of Ohio. It’s an alarming call for Medvedev ahead of the season’s last Grand Slam event. The former No. 1 won the US Open in 2021 after denying Novak Djokovic calendar-year Grand Slam. Outside of the Halle final, Indian Wells semifinals, and Madrid quarterfinals, Daniil Medvedev’s season has been an awful.
It was also a big match for Walton as the Australian No. 1, Alex de Minaur faced an elimination in second round after losing to American Reilly Opelka. De Minaur already won a title in Washington and everyone hoped for a deep run from the Aussie star at Cincinnati Open. Popyrin also added a great news for Australia as he defeated the Spanish teenager Martin Landaluce 7-6 (7-3) 6-3 to set a big third-round battle with Andrey Rublev.
