Political tensions between nations often spill into sports unfortunately. Russian athletes faced widespread bans after their country’s military actions. The Olympics barred them from competing under their flag. Many sporting organizations imposed similar restrictions across different disciplines. These decisions sparked debates about punishing athletes for government policies. But, the UFC operates differently than most sports organizations though and Dana White has maintained relationships with fighters from every country.
Russian competitors continue fighting in the octagon without restrictions currently. But the UFC White House event presents a unique situation nobody anticipated. Can a Russian fighter compete at the home of the American government? Dana White gives his take on whether the Russian Islam Makhachev can fight on the UFC White House card after his championship victory.
White addressed this exact question during the UFC 322 post-fight media scrum. Reporters asked about the original concept for the UFC White House event. Initial reports suggested it would feature American fighters against international opponents. That framing created obvious complications for Russian athletes like Makhachev. But White quickly shut down that speculation.
“Yeah, it’s not America vs. The world. [It’s about] what’s the best card we can build. We are talking about him possibly, GOAT talk here, depending on what he does in his next couple of fights. So, it’s a possibility.”

This makes perfect sense from a business perspective obviously. The UFC wants their biggest stars performing on their most important stage. Artificial restrictions based on nationality would limit their options unnecessarily. Building the best possible card means including whoever deserves to be there.
The new welterweight champion had earlier made his pitch to be on the card. Joe Rogan asked Makhachev when he wanted to defend his title next. The Dagestani fighter delivered a message aimed directly at one person. “Donald Trump, let’s go. Open the White House, I’m coming.”
The White House card is scheduled for June 14th, 2026. That date coincides with President Trump’s eightieth birthday perfectly. It promises to be one of the biggest UFC events ever held. Several top names have already expressed interest in fighting that night. But Makhachev might have the strongest case of anyone right now. He just became a two-division champion in dominant fashion. The greatest Russian fighter competing at the American White House would be quite the statement.
