‘Broken Hand and Norovirus’ – Joe Rogan Reveals Why Alex Pereira Wasn’t in the Best Shape at UFC 313!

Eric Divakaran

At UFC 313 we witnessed a huge upset as former light heavyweight champ Alex Pereira was defeated via unanimous decision by Magomed Ankalaev. The Brazilian was favored to win the fight, but we saw a new light heavyweight champion get crowned at Las Vegas.

Ankalaev was looked at as a threat particularly because of his grappling and ground game. However, he stood up with Poatan and landed 127 total strikes compared to Pereira’s 97. He also connected with 94 significant strikes in comparison to Poatan’s 76, and kept Pereira on his backfoot the entire fight, not letting him gather any sort of momentum throughout.

The Russian completely dominated Poatan, and we could believe what we were witnessing. We knew that Ankalaev was going to be one of the toughest challenges for the former light heavyweight champ, but we never expected him to lose the way he did. Pereira did not look like his usual self and there was clearly something off with him.

UFC’s commentator and podcaster Joe Rogan claimed that the Poatan wasn’t a 100% going into the fight. So today we’ll look at what exactly went wrong for Pereira at UFC 313.

What Exactly Happened in Pereira vs Ankalaev at UFC 313?

As we previously stated that Pereira did not look like his usual self in the fight, and Joe Rogan only confirmed our beliefs further as he said that Pereira fought with a broken hand and norovirus against Ankalaev at UFC 313.

“They say he fought with a broken hand and norovirus (a group of viruses that causes severe vomiting and diarrhea) against Ankalaev.” He claimed on his podcast Joe Rogan Experience. “He’s fought with a broken toe before. When he beat Jiri Prochazka, he had a f**ked up knee. Remember when he (Pereira) tumbled at the end of the fight, that’s because his knee wouldn’t support him. He was basically fighting on one leg in the first fight.”

Poatan has fought in 11 UFC fights so far in the span of 5 years. He’s known to not back down from anybody and is willing to fight whoever he gets. Due to him taking so many fights, it’s bound to take a toll on his body. The best thing for Pereira now is to scale back on the number of fights he takes within a year, as he is averaging 3 fights every year since 2022.

However, if what Rogan said was true, it is commendable that Pereira went on to fight Ankalaev even with a broken hand and an illness without letting anybody know.

I cover the National Football League and things cannot get better than that. I always dreamed to play football or basketball professionally since I’m built like a Running Back. But now that I can’t, since I’m technically in the “Unc” age, I thought why not pick a career in sports industry? So here I am, doing what I love, and hoping that the Commanders win the Super Bowl. I give love to players when it’s due, but can be critical about their performances at the same time. Enough about me, now let my articles do all the talking.
