It’s No. 1 vs No. 2 in the final of the 2025 BMW Open in Munich, as Alexander Zverev and Ben Shelton navigated their way into the deciding title clash. While one player came into the tournament on the back of poor form, the other is in unfamiliar territory on this surface. Can Zverev capture the trophy at home, and challenge Carlos Alcaraz for the World No. 2 ranking before Roland Garros?
Alexander Zverev is having a rough 2025 thus far; after a good outing in Melbourne Park which saw him reaching the final, the German stooped to underwhelming lows in the South American and USA swings. Nonetheless, his 24-7 record on clay in the past 12 months is encouraging, and Sascha has displayed an immaculate level of tennis this week. Shelton will be the first seeded player that Zverev challenges, which reiterates that he must bring his A-Game.
Despite being the second seed, not many predicted that Ben Shelton would reach Sunday’s main event. After all, he is 8-5 on clay courts this past year and has converted a mere 38% break points. In last week’s Monte Carlo Masters, the 22-year-old was ousted in Round-1. Yet, Shelton’s aggressive tennis has earned him victories over the likes of Van de Zandschulp and Cerundolo en route to the final.
The head to head record between Alexander Zverev and Ben Shelton is 1-0. Zverev has won the only previous meeting, which took place at the Cincinnati Masters in 2024.

This will be the first face-off between Zverev and Shelton on clay. While the German’s style of play and experience puts him as the front-runner ahead of the encounter, it takes no expert to know that the American will fight till the last point. Even in their solitary match-up last year, it took a marathon effort from Sascha to edge past Shelton.

As cliche as it sounds, home court advantage could play a huge role in Sunday’s final. Zverev has managed to produce his highest quality, clutch tennis when the crowd has given him the boost. Moreover, Shelton’s inexperience on the big stages of this surface could prove to be his downfall in the Munich final.
Prediction: Alexander Zverev in three sets.
Alexander Zverev Win: 1/5
Ben Shelton Win: 4/1
