ATP BMW Open Munich 2025 Semifinal Results: Alexander Zverev Makes Merry on Home Turf, Ben Shelton Survives Cerundolo Onslaught En Route to Final

Here’s what went down on semifinals day in Munich.

Saturday brought about semifinals day in Bavaria, as the four best players were on collision course for a spot in the 2025 BMW Open final. An out-of-form Alexander Zverev continued his bid for a title this year, and came up against the unseeded Fabian Marozsan. In the other half of the draw, No. 2 seed Ben Shelton hit a roadblock in the form of clay court maestro Francisco Cerundolo. Who made it to Sunday’s showpiece match-up?

In semifinal-1, World No. 15 Ben Shelton faced a tricky opponent in 5th seed Francisco Cerundolo. The Argentine raced ahead in the opening set, leaving the southpaw bewildered on Centre Court. Shelton failed to win a single first serve return point, and struck 12 unforced errors with his 2 winners. Cerundolo couldn’t convert his break point in the American’s opening service game, but broke twice as the set progressed.

As the second set began, the No. 2 seed shifted gears and took the attack to Cerundolo. Leading the head to head 1-0 against his South American counterpart, Shelton was in no mood to give up. He broke in the very first game – being aided by Cerundolo’s double fault. Despite the 26-year-old breaking back in game six, Shelton edged out a second set tiebreak to pull back.

In the decider, momentum shifted again when Cerundolo broke Shelton to love in the opening game. It was an error-prone, yet engaging duel with loads of intriguing rallies. Eventually, it was the left-handed powerhouse who prevailed by acquiring the decisive break in Game-10. He pulled off an epic comeback to ensure his 100% head to head record against the Argentine remains intact.

Result: Shelton def. Cerundolo 2-6 7-6(7) 6-4.

Alexander Zverev walked onto Centre Court with the backdrop of a rapturous Munich crowd. It showed in his game, as the German broke Marozsan straightaway. However, the Hungarian broke back in Game-4. In a tightly contested opening set, Sascha struck five aces and 13 winners. Heading into the tiebreak, he raced ahead 3-0 and 6-1. Eventually, the three-time Grand Slam finalist won the set 7-6(2).

The second set was decided by one break of serve – which came in the 8th game. Although Marozsan was throwing everything at him, Zverev’s serve was in full flow on Saturday. He served four more aces in set two, and backed it up with brilliant down the line groundstrokes. Not facing a break point himself, Zverev converted 1/2 on his opponent’s serve.

Result: Zverev def. Marozsan 7-6(2) 6-3.

The final of the 2025 BMW Open in Munich will be contested between the top two seeds after all. After a tense week, Alexander Zverev and Ben Shelton will leave it all on the court for bragging rights. Who is going to capture the coveted trophy on German soil?
