Why the Buffalo Bills Week 9 Win Over the Chiefs Feels Different than Past Years

Devavrat Kulkarni

The Bills defense dominated the Chiefs like never before in Week 9!

The Buffalo Bills and the Kansas City Chiefs have become a dynamic rivalry over the past few years. Both teams have not only dominated their respective divisions, but also have one of the top quarterbacks on their rosters in the modern-day NFL.

Whenever these two teams have met, be it in the regular season or the postseason, with Josh Allen leading the Bills and Patrick Mahomes leading the Chiefs, the games have been highly competitive. In fact, while Allen now holds a 5-1 lead in the regular season, Mahomes is 4-0 in the playoffs.

And while this has become the narrative of late, since the Bills have yet to get over the hurdle that is the Kansas City Chiefs in the postseason, one NFL analyst feels the Bills’ recent win on Sunday was completely different from their previous wins over the Chiefs.

Kay Adams Highlights the Bills’ Defensive Effort against Patrick Mahomes

The one thing that truly stood out from Sunday’s win over the Chiefs was the dominant pass rush and secondary play from the Buffalo Bills. After the game, NFL analyst and host of ‘Up & Adams’ podcast, Kay Adams, pointed out the Bills’ defense as the main factor why they won the game.

Overall, the Bills had a big game from the likes of Josh Allen, James Cook, and even Dalton Kincaid on the offensive side of the ball, but what was alarming to see was just how dominant this Bills’ defense played. As per Adams, if the Bills can continue executing at this level on defense, that could be the reason they end up winning the Super Bowl this season.

“The Bills did win this one because of A – like what could win them the Super Bowl in this defense. They have my attention when it comes to that,” said Adams on her podcast. “Joey Bosa, I don’t know what clicked. I don’t know what’s happening. They pressured Mahomes 28 times on 34 pass attempts. 16 of those came from Bosa, came from their draft pick Greg Rousseau.”

Adams also praised the secondary, which held Mahomes to under 50% completion for the first time in his professional career.

“The secondary, tremendous. They hold Patrick under 50% completions for the first time in his career. I know that they have beaten the Chiefs in the regular season plenty of times. They’ve never shown they can do that, though, to Patrick Mahomes. That is the difference.”

Recipe for Success against Mahomes and the Chiefs

Looking back, especially at the two Super Bowls that the Chiefs have lost, the first one against the Buccaneers and the second against the Eagles, what was apparent was the dominant fashion in which the defensive line got after Patrick Mahomes.

In both those games, the Chiefs were completely outplayed on both sides of the ball, but what was interesting was how the Bucs and the Eagles’ defensive players put constant pressure on Mahomes, forcing him to make mistakes and run for his life.

This past Sunday, the Bills had a similar game plan and executed it to the T. As rightly pointed out by Adams, this was a performance from the Bills’ defense that we had not seen previously against Mahomes and the Chiefs.

Now, the question is, can Buffalo execute a similar game plan should these two teams meet once again in January? If this game was not a one-off and if Buffalo has finally assembled a team worthy of defeating KC, then this is the recipe for success, and the Bills will have to repeat it in the postseason if they are to finally get over the line.

The best part of this job is that I get to write a variety of pieces with the freedom to explore content from various angles. It also enables me to stay up to date with the sporting world, which otherwise can be difficult to do in the day-to-day grind. In a world full of chaos, sports unite and entertain like nothing else!
