Xu to make her Grand Slam main draw debut at SW19.

When the draw for the 2025 Wimbledon Championships was released, she was still moving into her Airbnb in London. Little did 17-year-old Mimi Xu know that upon checking the fixtures, an epic realisation would beckon on her. She was set to face the 2021 US Open champion Emma Raducanu in her Grand Slam main draw debut on Court-1.

“I get a message from my coach saying, ‘What an amazing draw. So exciting,’ and I’m like I haven’t seen the draw. My mum’s getting messages saying, ‘Such a good draw for her to really go out there and play.’ So I’m just scrolling and trying to find out who I’m actually playing, and I end up seeing that I’m playing Emma [Raducanu],” said the teen sensation.

Xu also handed out early warning signs to Raducanu – the World No. 300 has made it clear that she has nothing to lose, and will go all out in her bid to make the Welsh contingent proud. Here’s all you need to know about Britain’s rising star.

Mimi Xu – The Next Big Thing in British Tennis

Mingge Olivia “Mimi” Xu was born on 2 October, 2007 in Swansea. At the tender age of 3, Xu took a liking to tennis and joined the Swansea Tennis & Squash Club. Having grown up finding inspiration from veterans like Serena Williams and Simona Halep, the prodigious talent also admired the championship run of Canada’s Bianca Andreescu at the US Open.

A few months after her epic triumph at the US Open in 2021, Emma Raducanu was hunting for a practice partner in the build-up to Wimbledon. This is when she ran into Xu, and the duo hit for 45 minutes. “That’s something that Mimi is never going to forget,” recalled Katie O’Brien – LTA national women’s coach and former British No. 1.

The Young Career of Mimi Xu

At the age of 14, Mimi Xu won the LTA Junior National Championships in 2022. She defeated compatriot Talia Neilson-Gatenby 6-4 7-5 in the final at the National Tennis Centre. As a result, Xu was handed a wild card into the 2022 Wimbledon qualifying event. She also reached the Wimbledon Round of 16 in the junior girls’ singles category during the 2022 and 2023 seasons.

In 2024, the Brit won the Junior National Championships in singles and doubles, and received another wild card into the Wimbledon qualifiers. This also enabled her to break into the Top-10 of the junior rankings for the first time. Xu has notched some terrific results on the doubles circuit at the junior level – she is a Wimbledon runner-up (2024), Australian Open semifinalist (2024) and quarterfinalist at Roland Garros (2023) and the US Open (2023, 2024).

Things started going uphill when Xu was awarded a wild card into the Birmingham Open WTA-125. Making her debut at this level, the fiery stroke-maker powered past top seed Alycia Parks in Round-1. She eventually lost in the quarterfinal stage. A fortnight later, Xu made her WTA Tour main draw debut at the Nottingham Open, where she beat Top-100 player Katie Volynets. As a result, she was given a wild card into the 2025 Wimbledon main draw.

The story of Mimi Xu is an inspiring example of how hard work and persistence can help light a life-changing spark out of nowhere. How far will the 17-year-old go at Wimbledon 2025? Let’s wait and watch.
