As Wimbledon 2025 gets underway, fifth seed Taylor Fritz faces an opener against unseeded Frenchman Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard. Fritz, one of the top hopes for American tennis, reached the quarterfinals last year, while Mpetshi Perricard has never gone beyond the fourth round at SW19.

This will be their first career meeting, and what a stage to do it on. For both men, an early exit would mean a missed opportunity to surpass or even match past results. It’s the kind of match where form meets nerves, and anything can happen. After all, unpredictability is what makes tennis great.

Fritz enters Wimbledon with solid momentum, fresh off an Eastbourne title, where he beat Jenson Brooksby in straight sets. Just weeks earlier, he lifted the Stuttgart trophy, taking down Alexander Zverev in straights, including a second-set tiebreak. Still, it’s been a patchy year overall. Between those titles came a first-round loss in London, and beyond a semifinal in Miami (losing a tight one to Jakub Mensik) and quarterfinals in Delray and Geneva, he hasn’t gone past the third round elsewhere.

Statistically, Fritz has served big with 371 aces, 79% first-serve points won, and a 45% break-point conversion on 202 chances. But his return game still needs work, with only 27% of first-serve return points won so far this year.

Mpetshi Perricard, meanwhile, hasn’t found consistent rhythm. He opened strong with a semifinal run in Brisbane but fell in the first round at Melbourne. Illness kept him out of Rotterdam, while Auckland and Eastbourne were skipped in preparation for Melbourne and Wimbledon, respectively. Though he did make a title run, it was in the Challenger Bordeaux, where he beat Nikoloz Basilashvili for the title. Outside of that, he’s yet to pass the round of 16 this season.

He’s fired 274 aces, won 76% on first serve, and converted 32% of break points on 66 chances, but like Fritz, his return game is lacking, with just 20% first-serve return points won.
