Inside Coco Gauff’s Faith and Identity: What Grounds the Tennis Star
Coco Gauff, current world No. 2 and 2023 US Open champion, has quickly become one of tennis’s brightest stars. At just 21, she boasts nine WTA singles titles and won the 2024 French Open doubles crown with Katerina Siniakova.
She’s now set to face world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka in the 2025 Roland Garros final, and they will be meeting for the 11th time in their careers. Gauff, who made her pro debut at 15, credits her faith for much of her success. So, what religion does she follow? Let’s dive in.

Coco Gauff is a follower of the Christian religion.
From a young age, she and her father, Corey, have shared a prayer before every match, asking not for victory but for safety for her and her opponent. It’s a small moment of calm before the storm, a reminder of what really matters.
Today Jesus sacrifice His life for you and I. If you ever feel unloved or alone just know that He not only died but endured torture for you because He loves you and will always love you.❤️ pic.twitter.com/bYXdt5ILt7

After winning the 2023 Washington Open, Gauff gave thanks not just to her team but to God. She said. “I want to thank my Father, God for this. After losing 1st round Wimbledon it was a tough situation. A lot of prayer, a lot of support from my church family. So thank you to him & those who support me.”
Gauff showed further gratitude after her 2023 US Open win, which also made her the youngest champion after Serena Williams. She said, “I’d like to thank my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. I spent a lot of nights alone, crying, trying to figure it out. I still have a lot to figure out, but I thank Him for covering me. I don’t pray for results. I just ask that I get the strength to give it my all. Whatever happens, happens. I’m so blessed in this life.”

But a fateful writing job introduced me to the world of sports, and what began as a gig quickly became a passion. I understood those voices aren't noise; they're emotions of true sports fans, and now I am one of them, writing with the same energy I once questioned.
