WATCH: Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner’s Humanity & Sportsmanship in French Open Final Proves Tennis Is in Good Hands

Sankalp Harikrishnan

A night to remember for decades to comes.

Another chapter of clay court history was scripted on Sunday evening, as Carlos Alcaraz delivered an inspired performance to down World No. 1 Jannik Sinner in the 2025 French Open final. The Spaniard needed 5 hours 29 minutes to claw his way to victory – saving three championship points along the way. It was a sight to behold for anyone witnessing the encounter, as two of the world’s best tennis players fought tooth and nail for Roland Garros immortality.

Going into the match, both Sinner and Alcaraz had never lost a Grand Slam final. The 22-year-old entered Court Philippe-Chatrier on the back of four consecutive successes over his Italian opponent, and a 7-4 overall record. In terms of tactics, Sinner was serving to the Alcaraz backhand when under pressure, and adopted an attacking position on the Spanish sensation’s second serves. On the other hand, Alcaraz looked to keep Sinner on his toes with some deft drops and slices.

In Sets 3 and 4, the rallies became increasingly baseline heavy. The fatigue started to kick in for both men and the crowd played a role in pushing Alcaraz to the next level. After dropping the opening two sets, he produced a comeback for the ages to restore parity. In the decider, there were more drop shots induced and more low percentage shots as Sinner and Alcaraz went for the kill. The ultimate championship tiebreak resulted in a 10-2 decimation by the defending champion.

Apart from their swashbuckling stroke making ability, both Alcaraz and Sinner are known for their respectable nature. Coming from humble beginnings, their tennis journeys have been contrasting. But when it comes to playing the sport in the right spirit, seldom has it been done the way these two next generation talents do it. And it was evident in the Roland Garros summit clash as well.

Early in the second set, Alcaraz was fighting to stay alive in the match. Having dropped the opener, an early break was vital for him to even the odds. When a Sinner serve was called out at 40-40, Carlitos remarkably checked the mark himself and conceded the point. The magical scenes drew rapturous applause from the French crowd. The now five-time Grand Slam champion eventually conceded the second set, but not the match.

Jannik Sinner also showcased his classy attitude a couple of hours later. At 5-5 in the fourth set, Alcaraz was serving to apply pressure on Sinner. Two games ago, he had just left the whole of Italy stunned by cancelling three championship points for the 23-year-old. A brutal baseline exchange came to a close when an inside-in forehand by Carlitos was called out. But Sinner, recognising the spirit of the game, self-admittedly confirmed that the ball was in and conceded the point.

The 2025 Roland Garros men’s singles final was more than just a match. It was the epitome of resilience and determination, and a lesson in hard work and a refusal to accept failure. The World No. 1 and 2 reminded us why we love the beautiful sport of tennis – and proved to us that the future is in very potent hands!
