Toronto Adjusts Roster Amid Defensive Concerns
The Toronto Maple Leafs have made some roster adjustments as they navigate injury concerns. Defenseman Marshall Rifai has been recalled from AHL Toronto, while veteran forward Max Pacioretty has been placed on injured reserve after missing the last three games with an undisclosed injury.
Rifai’s recall is primarily a precautionary move. With defenseman Chris Tanev sidelined due to a short-term shoulder injury sustained in Tuesday’s game against the Boston Bruins, the Leafs found themselves in need of additional defensive depth. Though Rifai is unlikely to slot into the lineup, his presence ensures Toronto isn’t left shorthanded during the remainder of their road trip. Instead, the more experienced Philippe Myers is expected to fill in for Tanev if needed.

The 26-year-old Rifai has spent much of the season between the NHL and AHL but has yet to see any game action with the Leafs this year. He has just two NHL appearances to his name, both coming last season. Despite limited ice time at the top level, his defensive play in the AHL impressed the Leafs’ front office enough to earn him a two-year, one-way contract extension, signaling their belief in his potential for future seasons.
Meanwhile, Pacioretty’s move to injured reserve isn’t expected to be long-term. The 36-year-old forward has dealt with multiple injuries this season, missing 17 games in total. However, none have been linked to his previous Achilles surgeries, which sidelined him for much of the last two years. In his limited action, Pacioretty has contributed five goals and eight assists in 37 games while bringing a strong physical presence with 105 hits—one of the highest totals of his career.
Toronto approaches a crucial stretch in their schedule, these roster moves will ensure they have the necessary reinforcements while they await Tanev’s return. Rifai might not see ice time immediately, but his presence provides security should another injury arise on the blue line.
